As a transplant social worker at Mayo Clinic, Sally Blackwell supports patients and families through every phase of their transplant journey.

In 2021, her perspective shifted when she became the patient – battling stage 3b colorectal cancer.

Today, she brings her lived experience into all aspects of her work and is helping lead a new path forward for patients through the launch of the first colorectal cancer liver transplant support group of its kind.

Today is Bike to Work Day for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and we're celebrating the staff members who choose to bike to work! For approximately 400 staff cyclists each day, biking is more than just transportation — it's a healthy, sustainable way to start and end the workday.

To support bike commuters, Mayo Clinic has recently expanded and enhanced bicycle amenities across Rochester campuses, including a new secure bike room near the Domitilla bus drop-off. Watch the video from the December 2025 opening!

Mayo Clinic also has expanded bike storage in the West Parking Ramp (Ramp 9) secure bike room and improved security features, including security phones in all secure bike rooms and a new window in the West Parking Ramp secure bike room door to improve visibility and awareness as staff enter and exit.

Other improvements include a new exterior door at the First Street Ramp (Ramp 12) secure bike room, allowing cyclists to enter without navigating vehicle traffic, as well as lock storage in the Discovery Ramp secure bike room and a repair stand and pump in the West Parking Ramp secure bike room.

And more improvements are on the way!

Ashley joined Mayo Clinic as a licensed practical nurse and is now a registered nurse — a journey she says was made possible by the support of her team. Working alongside RNs inspired her to continue her education, while colleagues encouraged her growth, supported her schedule and mentored her along the way. "It's shown me how deeply Mayo values its staff and invests in their success," Ashley said.

Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, it has served as a time to recognize this important moment in our nation's history. A big thank you to Maggie and her nursing teammates for supporting St. Mary's Food Bank through a recent food drive.

Maggie and her colleagues came together to donate food and raise funds, which were used to purchase additional grocery items for families in the local community.

From organizing donations to keeping her teammates engaged throughout the month, Maggie helped turn a simple idea into meaningful action. The generosity and teamwork behind this effort are a reminder that caring extends beyond patient care and into the communities we serve.

Thank you to Maggie and everyone who contributed to making a difference!

Hundreds of patients, staff and friends recently gathered in Geffen Auditorium to welcome four peregrine falcon hatchlings from their rooftop nest in downtown Rochester.

The fluffy three-week-old chicks were named, checked by biologists and fitted with small identification bands so Mayo Clinic’s falcon team can follow their journey after they leave the nest.

For nearly four decades, Mayo Clinic has played a role in peregrine falcon recovery — a program that continues to inspire patients, staff and falcon fans around the world. MPR News

For almost four decades, Mayo Clinic has raised peregrine falcons as part of a national recovery effort to save what had been an endangered species. Now, the peregrine falcon program is a beloved part of the world-renowned hospital's offerings.

Mollie Luhman, a research coordinator at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, has spent more than two decades supporting transplant patients and care teams with compassion, professionalism and a deep commitment to patient-centered care.

When Mollie learned she could become a living kidney donor, the decision felt like a natural extension of the values that had guided her throughout her life. Grounded in years of working alongside transplant teams, she approached donation with confidence and gratitude.

Today, that experience shapes every interaction she has with patients. Having experienced the vulnerability that comes with being a patient herself, she understands the importance of trust, compassion and feeling truly supported throughout the transplant journey.
