“It was like a bomb went off.”

One moment, teenager Kylie Smith was taking photos with friends at Webster Park on a summer evening. The next, she had been struck by lightning.

Nearby, Andrea Rogers, a surgical technologist at Highland Hospital, heard screams and ran toward the scene. Relying on the CPR training she practices every three months, Andrea took over chest compressions and continued as thunder rumbled overhead and bystanders anxiously waited for signs of life.

Then Kylie took a breath. And another. CPR saved her life.

Once first responders arrived, Kylie was rushed to Golisano Children's Hospital, where she received specialized care for burns and other injuries caused by the strike.

Today, Kylie is back doing what she loves, and sharing her story to encourage others to learn CPR. Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, to anyone — and immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. Kylie is living proof.

Wear Orange Weekend is a national movement that brings communities together to honor victims of gun violence, support survivors, and raise awareness about the importance of gun violence prevention and firearm safety.

Today, we kicked off the weekend alongside 585-SNUG, Rise Up Rochester, Moms Demand Action, Pathways to Peace, and University of Rochester Medicine’s Firearm Injury Prevention Program (FIPP) to share educational resources, distribute free gun locks, and connect with community members through meaningful conversations about gun safety and violence prevention.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, wore orange, and helped spread the message that preventing gun violence is a community effort. 🧡

At just 10 years old, Aubrey suffered sudden cardiac arrest after being startled by an emergency weather alert. After multiple additional cardiac arrests and being placed on emergency life support, she was transferred to us at Golisano Children’s Hospital, where the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit team diagnosed her with a rare genetic heart condition called catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT).

At GCH, Aubrey was stabilized with medication and received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to help protect her heart. Today, she's back to cheerleading and sharing her story to inspire others facing similar challenges.

Taelynn faced life-threatening challenges from her very first hours of life. Diagnosed with Type 3b intestinal atresia, she underwent emergency surgery at just 13 hours old and spent 80 days in the NICU while relying on IV nutrition and a feeding tube to survive.

With unwavering support from her mother, Kimberly, and the expert care teams at Golisano Children’s Hospital, Taelynn steadily defied expectations over the years — progressing from tube feeds to fully eating on her own.

Did you know New York was one of the first states to include spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in universal newborn screening?

This made it possible for infants to be diagnosed within days of birth—before symptoms begin—when treatment can most effectively preserve motor function and change the course of the disease.

One of those children is Samuel. Diagnosed with SMA through newborn screening, Samuel received gene therapy here at GCH at just four weeks old. Today, he is part of a growing number of children whose lives and outcomes are being transformed through the power of early detection and intervention.

From a few drops of blood to specialized care at Golisano Children’s Hospital—that’s where research becomes action.
