“It was like a bomb went off.”
One moment, teenager Kylie Smith was taking photos with friends at Webster Park on a summer evening. The next, she had been struck by lightning.
Nearby, Andrea Rogers, a surgical technologist at Highland Hospital, heard screams and ran toward the scene. Relying on the CPR training she practices every three months, Andrea took over chest compressions and continued as thunder rumbled overhead and bystanders anxiously waited for signs of life.
Then Kylie took a breath. And another. CPR saved her life.
Once first responders arrived, Kylie was rushed to Golisano Children's Hospital, where she received specialized care for burns and other injuries caused by the strike.
Today, Kylie is back doing what she loves, and sharing her story to encourage others to learn CPR. Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, to anyone — and immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. Kylie is living proof.
