Thank you to The Wait With You Foundation and Little Blue Thistle for delivering 86 beautiful bouquets to nurses, staff, and families in our NICU and PICU, along with Strong Memorial Hospital’s antepartum unit. 💐

These thoughtful arrangements brought a little extra beauty and brightness to the day, while offering a reminder of the kindness that means so much during life’s challenging moments.

Meet Avery! 💙

Born in July 2014 with Down syndrome, Avery spent her first 15 days at Golisano Children’s in the NICU, where her care team supported her through several early health challenges. Since then, her family has continued to turn to Golisano Children’s for specialized care, including neurology and developmental pediatrics.

In 2024, Avery was diagnosed with Down syndrome regression disorder. She now receives monthly IVIG infusions at the pediatric infusion clinic as part of her ongoing treatment.

“The care we receive at Golisano Children’s has been exceptional,” shares her mom, Cristina. “Her providers continue to provide care that allows Avery to be her best self, and that has meant so much to our family!”

Through it all, Avery’s joyful spirit shines. She loves swimming, cheering on the Buffalo Bills, and filling her home with music, from Taylor Swift to the Beatles. 🎶

Our pediatric palliative care team marked Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care Day by visiting floors throughout Golisano Children’s, where they shared educational resources, asked trivia questions, and handed out treats to raise awareness about the role of palliative care in supporting children and families through serious illness. 🎩

We’re grateful to our team for helping others better understand this important part of care at Golisano Children’s. 💙

Meet Killian, the “miracle baby.” 💙

Before he was born, doctors discovered a large tumor in his heart. Genetic testing confirmed he had tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a rare genetic condition that can cause benign tumors to grow in different parts of the body.

Given the size of his tumor and the anticipated complications, Killian’s care team took an extraordinarily rare approach: treating him before birth. His mom, Savannah, began taking an oral mTOR inhibitor during pregnancy so the medication could cross the placenta and help shrink his tumor. This approach had only been reported a small number of times worldwide and had never been done in Rochester.

When Killian was born nearly a month early, his family expected he would spend months in the NICU. Instead, the prenatal treatment had the hoped-for effect. His echocardiogram looked great, his heart was beating normally, and the family was discharged just three days later.

Now 18 months old, Killian is showing no symptoms of TSC. “The only thing he has is the diagnosis itself,” says Savannah. “He has done so well and bypassed every concern.”

These days, Killian is busy being a typical toddler: running around, flashing his mischievous grin and giving plenty of hugs and kisses to his family’s three dogs. 🐶
