It was a great opportunity to step away from our usual routines and just enjoy each other's company, all while adding a little more whimsy and personality to our community. 💙 We’re proud to be part of a community we care about, and we hope this cheerful design brings a smile to everyone who passes by! 🌼✨

RAWNY Image Feature of the Month: Hereditary Retinal Dystrophy.

In recognition of Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, we'd like to share a case of an inherited retinal disease (IRD) diagnosed in a young child. Sometimes, the earliest signs of a retinal condition become apparent long before a patient reaches the eye clinic. In this case, a young child was referred for a comprehensive retinal evaluation after experiencing increasing difficulty seeing and reading at school. Although the symptoms initially appeared subtle, Optomap imaging revealed retinal findings characteristic of a hereditary retinal dystrophy. Classic bull's-eye pigmentary changes with a ring of increased autofluorescence surrounding the area of macular atrophy were especially evident on fundus autofluorescence imaging. Genetic testing later confirmed a mutation in the RDH12 gene, which is associated with inherited retinal diseases such as Leber congenital amaurosis, early-onset severe retinal dystrophy, and certain forms of retinitis pigmentosa.

With a definitive diagnosis, the child's family gained a better understanding of the cause of the vision difficulties, allowing them to provide support, resources, and educational accommodations to help their child succeed both in and out of the classroom. This case highlights the important role of advanced retinal imaging in the early detection of inherited eye diseases. When combined with genetic testing, these technologies can provide an accurate diagnosis that guides clinical management, informs genetic counseling, and helps families plan for the future.

Our Practice Administrator, Sherri White, MLS, recently participated in the 2026 Annual Capitol Hill Advocacy Conference, joining colleagues in Washington, D.C., to advocate for physicians and the patients we serve. Representing 14 medical specialties, the group spent two days learning about key healthcare policy issues and meeting with members of Congress to discuss legislation that impacts patient access to care and the sustainability of physician practices. Topics included the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act (Seniors’ Act), Safe Step Act, Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act, and the Provider Reimbursement Stability Act. We are grateful to Representative Tom Suozzi (D-NY-03) for taking time from his busy schedule to meet with our delegation and engage in these important conversations.
