Gastroparesis is far more than just delayed stomach emptying. This condition can deeply disrupt nutrition, diminish quality of life, and lead to significant health care struggles, yet it is still too often misunderstood or overlooked. Securing an accurate diagnosis and crafting personalized treatment plans can truly change lives. I am honored to recognize the tremendous contributions of our Mayo Clinic colleague, Dr. Michael Camilleri, whose landmark JAMA review on gastroparesis shines new light on this challenging disorder. His in-depth article explores the evolving science and human toll of a disease that can turn everyday life upside down for patients. The review provides heartfelt, practical guidance for diagnosis, nutrition management, medication, and advanced therapies, empowering clinicians to offer compassionate, evidence-based support for individuals with gastroparesis.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Anebo is an avid PS5 gamer who enjoys everything from story-driven adventures to competitive matchups. He's also a fan of books and shows centered around medieval history, politics, legends, and complex characters—and is currently obsessed with House of the Dragon. 🎮📚
Fun Fact: Whether it's gaming, binge-watching a favorite series, or tracking down the best local food spot, Dr. Anebo is always ready for his next adventure.

🌟 Welcome, Dr. Maria Hernandez Tejero! 🌟

We are excited to introduce Dr. Maria Hernandez Tejero, one of our new Transplant Hepatology Fellows at Mayo Clinic.

Originally from Spain, Dr. Hernandez Tejero completed her Gastroenterology training there before moving to the United States to pursue research and advanced training in hepatology at Mayo Clinic. Over the past several years, she has had the opportunity to work alongside outstanding scientists and mentors, developing her expertise in basic and translational science. She chose Mayo Clinic because of the incredible environment for learning, discovery, and professional growth, and is excited to build on that foundation through transplant hepatology fellowship training.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Hernandez Tejero enjoys running, cooking, spending time outdoors, reading when she has the chance, and attending classical music performances whenever she visits a major city.

🔬 Scholarly Sunday
This week, we are proud to recognize Dr. Mouhand Mohamed and his collaborators for their recent publication:
"Dysplasia Detection Using High-Definition Scopes with Dye vs Virtual Chromoendoscopy in IBD: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials."

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer, making regular surveillance colonoscopies an important part of their care. During these procedures, physicians may use special techniques to improve their ability to identify abnormal or precancerous tissue, known as dysplasia.

In this study, Dr. Mohamed and colleagues reviewed data from multiple randomized clinical trials comparing dye chromoendoscopy (using a dye to highlight abnormal tissue) and virtual chromoendoscopy (using advanced imaging technology to enhance visualization). Their findings showed that both approaches had similar success in detecting dysplasia when used with high-definition colonoscopes.

These results help support flexibility in how physicians perform IBD surveillance while maintaining a focus on early detection and colorectal cancer prevention. Congratulations to Dr. Mohamed and his team on this important contribution to advancing care for patients with IBD! 👏

Outside of fellowship, Dr. Osman enjoys cheering on Minnesota professional sports and Iowa Hawkeyes athletics, playing tennis and golf, cooking, hiking, and spending time with family at the lake. 🎾⛳🏈

Dr. Osman was drawn to Mayo Clinic for its thoughtful training in gastroenterology and hepatology, exceptional mentorship, and welcoming culture. He was particularly inspired by Mayo's three-shield mission of patient care, research, and education and looks forward to growing as a clinician, scholar, and educator within such a collaborative environment.

Today, we celebrate a truly special milestone: Dr. Patrick Kamath’s 35th anniversary at Mayo Clinic. 🎉

For more than 3 decades, Dr. Kamath has brought not only exceptional expertise and dedication to his work, but also generosity, compassion, and a genuine commitment to the people around him. Dr. Kamath has not only shown a true love for medicine, but exemplified a pledge to outstanding patient care, clinical excellence, education, and advancing medicine.

Over the years, his influence has reached far beyond the patients he has cared for. He has inspired colleagues, mentored generations of trainees, and made a lasting difference in the lives of so many who have had the privilege of working alongside him and learning from him.

Dr. Shaw chose Mayo Clinic because of the exceptional opportunities it provides to advance his career and further develop his expertise in hepatology. During fellowship, he looks forward to enhancing his clinical acumen, expanding his research focus, and refining the pathway toward his future career goals.

Following fellowship, Dr. Shaw hopes to pursue a career in academic medicine, where he can contribute to both patient care and medical education.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Shaw enjoys playing squash, watching movies, and practicing mindfulness. A fun fact about him is that he considers himself a lighthearted and humorous person who enjoys bringing positivity and a sense of humor to everyday interactions.

This week, we are proud to recognize Dr. Shuji Mitsuhashi and his collaborators for their recent publication:

"Usability of a Novel Cholangiopancreatoscope for Tumor Detection and Stone Management" published in VideoGIE.

The study evaluated a new single-use endoscopic device that allows physicians to look directly inside the bile ducts and pancreas. This technology was used to investigate possible tumors and treat challenging bile duct and pancreatic stones. The research demonstrated that the device provided excellent visualization, enabled successful tissue sampling for diagnosis, and supported effective stone treatment, all while receiving high usability ratings from the physicians who used it.

In simple terms, this innovation may help doctors more accurately diagnose cancers and treat difficult stone diseases using minimally invasive techniques, ultimately improving care for patients with complex digestive disorders.

Congratulations to Dr. Mitsuhashi and the research team on this important contribution to advancing endoscopic technology and patient care! 👏
