Mackenzie Northrup Mental Health Counseling, PLLC Many of my clients struggle with the leftovers of both "little T" and "big T" traumas.

I believe therapy doesn’t have to be all serious and heavy—there’s room for humor and humanity, too. ✨️ Now taking new clients!

Like many of my clients, I’ve been juggling a lot and occasionally forgetting that I, too, need to practice what I preach.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how often we know what helps us, but in the moment, we reach for a pint of Ben and Jerry's in the dark instead (shout out to phish food).

This is your gentle reminder that forgetting your coping skills doesn’t make you broken. It makes you a person with a nervous system. You can start again. Even now.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Survivors don’t owe the world their stories, but when they do speak up, they deserve to be believed.

If this is your story, please hear this: It’s not your fault. You never deserved it. You are not alone. Healing is possible not by making peace with your oppression, but by reclaiming your power. My role as a therapist is to build you up, empower you, and support you in resisting, advocating, and healing on your terms.

If you need support, I’m here. You don’t have to carry this alone. 💜

So many of my clients express wishing something never happened, wishing they could forget, or feeling frustrated that the memory is still there. And I get it, healing would be so much easier if we could just erase the past.

But healing isn’t about forgetting. It’s about making peace with the fact that those experiences shaped you while not letting them define you. It’s about acknowledging your scars without letting them dictate your future.

And yeah, being called “strong” or “resilient” can feel more like an insult than a compliment when survival was never a choice. Strength wasn’t a decision; it was the only option. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at being told how strong you are, you’re not alone.

Healing isn’t about proving your resilience. It’s about creating a life where you don’t have to be resilient all the time.

🌷Happy Spring & congrats on making it through the darkest and coldest time of the year!

The Spring Equinox reminds us that light always returns, even when it feels far away. Just like nature, we go through cycles of growth, stillness, and renewal. This season invites us to:

✨ Let go of what no longer serves us
🌱 Plant new intentions for growth and healing
🌞 Embrace the light within ourselves

Healing isn’t about rushing to bloom—it’s about trusting the process. What seeds are you planting this season? 🌸

Happy Rare Disease Day!

Living with a rare disease, whether visible or invisible, means navigating a world that often doesn’t get it. Between the medical trauma, chronic pain, and having to become your own personal case manager, it’s a lot!

As a trauma therapist with both extensive clinical AND lived experience, I know firsthand that healing isn’t just about processing the hard stuff, it’s also about finding empowerment, community, and yes, even humor along the way.

You’re not alone in this. You deserve care that truly gets it. 💛 Check out my website (link in bio) to schedule an appointment with me to see if we vibe!

January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Human trafficking can happen anywhere – and it often looks different than we expect.

Many victims are manipulated or coerced, not physically restrained. Traffickers may be people the victim knows, and the signs can be subtle. This is why awareness is so important.

If you’re unsure whether you or someone you know might be experiencing trafficking, trust your instincts. Trafficking can feel like:
🔹 Being forced into work or activities against your will
🔹 Having ID or important documents withheld
🔹 Experiencing threats, blackmail, or fear of leaving a situation
🔹 Feeling trapped by a debt that seems impossible to repay

When seeking help, safety comes first. Traffickers may monitor communication, so try to reach out from a safe device or at a safe moment. Confidential help is available through the National Human Trafficking Hotline: 1-888-373-7888 or text HELP to 233733.

Your life matters. You deserve freedom and safety.
