Daily activities provide comfort, routine, and reduced anxiety for seniors with dementia. October is a great time to celebrate the colors of the season, pumpkins, leaves and Halloween. Here are a few crafty ideas to do, for an inspired harvest of memories !

1. Seasonal Memory Box. Find a collection of fall themed items like gourds, leaves, and cinnamon sticks. The tactile and visual elements can help trigger memories and engage the senses.

2. Gratitude Tree with Autumn Leaves. Craft a meaningful and enriching activity by collecting leaves and putting a phrase or word to it that can encourage positive thinking and stimulate emotional well-being.

Across the country, Home Instead teams are showing up with purpose at Walk to End Alzheimer’s events—walking in honor of loved ones, supporting families and raising critical funds for the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. 💜

We are proud to partner with the ’sAssociation as a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gold National Team. Together, Home Instead has raised more than $5.7 million over the past 18 years, including $258,000 last year alone, to advance Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

This year, we are well on our way to reaching our goal—and every donation and every step makes a meaningful difference. Thank you to every Care Pro, office team member, client, family member and community partner who walks, fundraises and helps move this mission forward.

To donate or find a Walk near you, visit: https://homeinsteadinc.visitlink.me/iZJ8YM Together, we are moving closer to a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

When searching for a senior living community, touring more than one place can make all the difference.

Look beyond the amenities and notice the everyday interactions: Do team members know residents by name? Do they speak directly to the person who may live there? Does the community feel warm, personal and welcoming?

In this Caregiver Chats clip, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole Will share why comparing communities can help families find the right fit for their loved one.

One tour rarely tells the whole story.

When you’re exploring senior living options for someone you love, visit more than one community—and pay attention to the details that reveal how people are truly cared for.

Are residents greeted by name? Are conversations warm and personal? Does the team speak directly to the older adult, not just their family?

Sometimes the clearest answer comes from comparing how each place feels.

Touring senior living communities for a loved one? Look beyond the scheduled visit.

In this clip from Caregiver Chats, Nicole Will shares why it can be helpful to stop by at a different time—like an evening or weekend—and notice the everyday experience. Are residents interacting naturally? Do team members seem calm, attentive and familiar with the people they support?

The right community is about more than the building. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel connected, valued and at home.

A scheduled tour can show you the highlights. An unscheduled visit can show you everyday life.

When you’re considering a senior living community for someone you love, Nicole Will suggests stopping by at a different time—an evening or weekend—and paying attention to what you see.

Are residents connecting? Does the team seem calm and engaged? Do people know one another by name?

It’s not just about finding a place to live. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel known, connected and at home.

When families begin exploring senior living, it’s easy to focus on the building first: the amenities, the dining room, the activity calendar.

But as Nicole Will () reminds us, the better place to begin is with the person.

What brings your loved one joy? Where do they find purpose? What kind of connection will help them feel known and at home?

In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole share a more person-centered way to approach one of caregiving’s biggest decisions.

Today is World Mental Health Day, which focuses on raising awareness and supporting mental health for people of EVERY age. Often older adults are overlooked in these conversation. How can we support our Older Adults today ? Here are a few suggestions.

1. Ask a Caring question, like "How have you been feeling lately?"
2. LISTEN. Patiently. Give them space to share, with judgment. This can SIGNIFICANTLY reduce stress.
3. ENCOURAGe connection. Help them join groups, senior centers, or just an afternoon out of the house.
4. Seek help. Depression and Older Adults is a very large part of Aging and its signs and symptoms can affect our older adults. It can affect the way you feel, act, and think.

As we celebrate Labor Day today, it is a day to celebrate and honor the American labor movement and also reflect on the unofficial end of summer and the start of the back-to-school season.

In celebration, it is a perfect time to spend with family, friends, with a picnic or a parade.

We wish you all a day full of rest, reflection and of course plenty of hot dogs and hamburgers !

The saying “with age comes wisdom” holds much truth. Research indicates that older adults generally have better emotional regulation and problem-solving skills than younger people. This wisdom, built over years of experience, makes seniors valuable sources of advice and guidance.

Fun Senior Facts About Aging...did you know ... ???

1. Older adults are happier: According to several studies, older adults tend to experience more positive emotions than younger adults. So, next time you’re feeling down, remember that things get better with age.

2. The brain is still growing: Contrary to popular belief, the brain continues to grow and develop throughout our lives. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that older adults may even have a thicker prefrontal cortex, which is associated with decision-making and problem-solving.

3. Laughter is the best medicine: We’ve all heard this saying before, but it’s especially true for seniors. Laughter has been shown to reduce stress, boost the immune system, and even improve heart health. So, make sure to surround yourself with people who make you laugh.
