"Master, everyone says I should be grateful. But when I look at my life, I only see what I don't have."
The monk smiled and handed the young man a cup of tea.
"Tell me," he asked, "does your body hurt today?"
"No."
"Are you hungry?"
"No."
"Did anyone you love die this morning?"
The young man looked confused.
"No."
The monk nodded.
"Then you are already carrying blessings you cannot see."
The young man remained silent.
The monk pointed toward the village.
"Some people would trade everything they own just to have your health."
He pointed to the sky.
"Some would give their fortune for one more day with someone they love."
Then he pointed to the tea in the young man's hands.
"And some are praying tonight for the simple peace you are experiencing right now."
The young man lowered his eyes.
For the first time, he stopped counting what was missing.
And started noticing what had never been taken away.
The monk smiled and said:
"If you cannot be grateful for what you have, be grateful for the troubles you don't have."
β¨ Takeaway:β¨
Gratitude is not only seeing your blessings. It is also seeing the storms that never reached your shore.
π· The happiest people are not those who have the most... but those who finally notice the grace in what they already hold.
