Mayo Clinic heart surgeons work with an experienced surgical team to perform robot-assisted heart surgery. In this type of procedure, surgeons reach your heart through small incisions between the ribs of your chest. The exact maneuvers performed in traditional open chest operation are duplicated by the surgeon using robotic arms, rather than his or her hands. During this procedure, your surgeon wo

rks at a remote console and views your heart in a magnified high-definition 3-D view on a video monitor. From the remote console, your surgeon's hand movements are translated precisely to the robotic arms at the operating table, which move similarly to the human wrist. A second surgeon and surgical team assists at the operating table, changing surgical instruments attached to the robotic arms. To connect with other patients, visit Mayo Clinic Connect:

Over the course of two weeks in July, Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Surgery partnered with Heart Attack Ethiopia on Mission #5, working alongside local and international teams across four partner hospitals. The teams treated 232 patients and performed 242 cardiac procedures expanding access to lifesaving cardiovascular care.

A highlight of the mission was the outstanding contribution of the Mayo Clinic volunteer team, organized by Senior Cardiovascular Perfusionist Mesfin Dollar. During the first week, led by cardiac surgeon Dr. Arman Arghami, the team completed seven open-heart surgeries. In the second week, under the leadership of Dr. Philip Spencer, five additional surgeries were performed, bringing the Mayo Clinic team's total to 12 lifesaving open-heart procedures.

The mission primarily focused on single- and double-valve surgeries for patients with advanced rheumatic heart disease—a preventable condition that continues to affect thousands of children and young adults in Ethiopia. For many of these patients, surgery represented their only opportunity for survival and a return to a healthy, productive life.

A heartfelt thank you to every member of the Mayo Clinic volunteer team whose dedication and expertise made this extremely successful mission possible. Special recognition goes to Dr. Arman Arghami, Dr. Philip Spencer, Dr. Elaine Griffeth, Mesfin Dollar, Tony Lawler, Samantha Le, Paige Wickum, Mariyum Mir, and Iyerusalem Dollar. Your willingness to share your time and talents has transformed the lives of patients and families and strengthened the future of cardiac care in Ethiopia.

For 30 years, Dr. Joseph Dearani has exemplified the very best of Mayo Clinic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has provided exceptional, compassionate care to patients and their families upholding Mayo’s primary value —that the needs of the patient come first. He received the Mayo Clinic Distinguish Clinician Award in recognition of his exceptional patient care. His commitment to excellence is not limited to patient care, he also demonstrated excellence in research, education, innovation, and mentorship inspiring colleagues and trainees alike.

As one of the world's leading congenital and adult congenital cardiac surgeons, Dr. Dearani has shaped generations of future cardiothoracic surgeons and our specialty. We all recognize his generosity and dedication to helping others succeed. He has devoted countless hours to teaching in the operating room, mentoring residents and fellows, helping colleagues, and welcoming surgeons from around the world to Mayo Clinic to learn congenital heart surgery, robotic cardiac surgery, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy surgery. His impact extends beyond Rochester through his leadership as president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, the Thoracic Surgery Foundation, and the Congenital Heart Surgery Society.

As we celebrate his 30-year milestone, we recognize a remarkable physician, colleague, and friend whose commitment to excellence has strengthened our Department and Mayo Clinic, advanced the care of patients around the world, and whose example continues to inspire us every single day. Please join me to congratulate and thank Dr. Dearani for his service at Mayo Clinic.

Totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass, or TECAB, is a completely closed chest robotic-assisted procedure. At Mayo Clinic, we use advanced robotic technology and perform the operation through a small keyhole incision without opening the breastbone. The robotic system allows us to harvest arteries and perform a precise coronary bypass with excellent visualization and control.

In summer 2023, Lauren’s routine run in Minneapolis suddenly felt off—she was exhausted within half a mile, and her wearable showed a sharp drop in heart rate variability despite being told she was “healthy.”

Trusting her instincts and her husband Joe’s advice, she got an echocardiogram that revealed severe mitral valve prolapse and an enlarged heart. She chose Mayo Clinic for robotic repair, and after meeting Dr. Arghami, felt confident in her decision.

After surgery, her valve was “sealing perfectly.” Lauren is deeply grateful to Dr. Arghami and his team for their exceptional care.
