Trauma is not always remembered as a clear story or image from the past. Often, it returns through our body's reactions, emotions, and behaviors in the present moment. A sound, smell, situation, or relationship can trigger feelings of fear, shame, anger, or panic without us fully understanding why. These reactions are not signs of weakness; they are reminders of how the nervous system learned to protect us during overwhelming experiences. Healing begins when we learn to recognize these reactions with curiosity and compassion, understanding that our responses make sense in the context of what we have lived through.

Healing rarely happens alone. While personal insight and self-reflection are important, meaningful healing often takes place in the presence of safe, supportive relationships. Connection reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles and provides opportunities to be seen, heard, and accepted as we are. Whether through friends, family, community, or a therapeutic relationship, a genuine connection can help repair wounds created by isolation, rejection, or trauma. As Esther Perel reminds us, healing is not just an individual journey—it is something that unfolds through our relationships with others.

“The body always leads us home… if we trust sensation.” – Pat Ogden, PhD

Our bodies often notice what our minds overlook. Through sensations, emotions, tension, and even moments of ease, the body offers valuable information about our experiences and needs. When we learn to slow down and listen without judgment, we can reconnect with ourselves more deeply and authentically. Trusting sensation is not about finding immediate answers; it is about allowing the body to guide us toward greater awareness, healing, and a sense of coming home to who we truly are.

Trauma often brings changes into our lives that we never asked for and never wanted. It can affect how we see ourselves, relate to others, and move through the world. Healing doesn't erase what happened, but it allows us the opportunity to reclaim our voice and make intentional choices about how we want to live moving forward. While trauma may shape part of our story, healing allows us to become an active participant in writing the next chapter.

When viewed through the lens of trauma healing, Brené Brown's quote speaks to a common obstacle in recovery: many trauma survivors carry not only the pain of what happened, but also shame about how they have been affected by it.

In the midst of healing from trauma, what is most needed is often safety, understanding, connection, and self-compassion—not shame for having normal human reactions to painful experiences.
That perspective can make it easier to engage in therapy, build supportive relationships, and gradually process difficult experiences without being overwhelmed by self-blame.

Be gentle with yourself.

Trauma can change the way we experience ourselves, others, and the world around us. It is not a sign of weakness—it is a natural response to experiences that felt overwhelming, frightening, or beyond our ability to cope at the time.

Every person carries their story differently. Some wounds are visible, while others remain hidden beneath the surface. PTSD is not about "getting over it." It is about understanding the impact of what happened and creating space for healing, connection, and growth.

This month, may we choose curiosity over judgment, compassion over stigma, and understanding over assumptions. Healing doesn't require perfection. It begins when people feel safe enough to be seen, heard, and supported.

You are not defined by what happened to you. There is more to your story than your pain, and healing remains possible—even when the path feels difficult.

“Be Real—Not Perfect” is a reminder that authenticity matters more than performance. So many people move through life believing they have to say the right thing, look a certain way, or hide the parts of themselves that feel messy or unfinished. But real connection is not built through perfection—it’s built through honesty, vulnerability, and the courage to show up as we truly are. When we allow ourselves to be human instead of flawless, we create space for growth, compassion, and meaningful relationships. Perfection often creates pressure. Being real creates freedom.

Memorial Day is a gentle reminder to slow down and savor the moments that matter most. Spend time with the people who make you laugh, feel lighter, and remind you how good it is to simply be together. Between the conversations, sunshine, and quiet pauses, give yourself permission to rest, recharge, and step away from the rush. Sometimes the most meaningful way to honor the day is by embracing gratitude, connection, and a little peace for yourself.

We are out of the office on Memorial Day but will return on Tuesday, May 26th. We will return phone calls when we are back in the office. Happy Monday!
