It's that time of year again. Nominations are now open for the 2026 What Rocks in Rockford Community's Choice Awards.

With June already here, it seems like a good time to look back at some of the health and fitness stories that have made headlines this year.

In January, Nature highlighted research showing that even brief periods of physical activity can improve health. More recently, ScienceDaily reported on research strengthening the link between ultra-processed foods and chronic disease. At the same time, updated dietary guidance from the American Heart Association, covered by Prevention, continued to emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and minimizing heavily processed foods.

Different researchers. Different studies. Same conclusion. Reinforcing what we've been saying for the past fifteen years:

Move More. Eat Better.

When we opened FitMe in 2011, our kids were small enough to carry. Last June, we hiked The Narrows in Zion National Park together as a family.

The fifteen years between those photos weren't built on shortcuts or fitness fads. They were built on thousands of ordinary decisions to move a little more and eat a little better.

Fifteen years later, we're still happy to see the science agrees.

As we wrap up our 15th anniversary look back, it seems fitting to end with the most ambitious project we ever undertook.

In 2016, we launched fit815, a print magazine and online publication built around a simple idea: if we're going to talk about what we believe, we should be willing to put it in writing.

Every issue was mailed to 15,000 homes throughout the Rockford area. We wrote about fitness, certainly, but also about local businesses, community, leadership, healthy living, and the kinds of values we believed helped people build better lives.

It wasn't designed to convince everyone to join FitMe. Quite the opposite.

Our belief was that if you read it and found yourself nodding along, then we'd probably be a good fit for each other. And if you didn't, that was okay too.

The twentieth issue went to press in March of 2020, just as the world was shutting down. Because fit815 was supported by local advertisers, we made the decision to end the publication there. Twenty issues felt like a good number to close the chapter on, and we certainly weren't going to ask our local business partners to spend money when so many were simply trying to survive.

We remain incredibly proud of what it became.

The website still exists at fit815.com, and we've continued to add articles from time to time, but the magazine itself remains a snapshot of a unique moment in our history.

Looking back, fit815 wasn't really about fitness at all.

It was about putting our values into the world and trusting that the right people would find us.

And many of them did.

Over 10 years ago, FitMe’s very first manager, Marc Kinnemann, and I created a series of animations inspired by Aesop’s Fables.

Not because we had a big marketing budget. Not because someone told us it would work.

We did it because in those early years, we had an entrepreneurial energy around this place that pushed us to constantly create, experiment, and find new ways to connect with people.

That startup mentality became part of who we were. It energized everything we did.

Looking back now, it’s hard not to think that spirit — combined with an amazing team and incredible members — is a big part of why FitMe weathered challenges like COVID and has had the privilege of serving this community for 15 years.

We photoshopped this image years ago for a social media post because the idea of somebody tattooing their gym on themselves seemed completely ridiculous and we thought people would find it fun and silly.

People tattoo their kids. Their spouses. Their favorite sports teams. Occasionally things they later spend good money having removed.

Looking back now, maybe this image wasn't quite as ridiculous as we thought.

Because the best things in life have a way of sticking with you.

As we approach the end of our anniversary month, we hope you've enjoyed reliving some of these memories with us. Fifteen years later, we're grateful for everything we've built together and honored that FitMe has become part of so many stories along the way.

The idea was simple: What if healthy living didn’t stop when you walked out the gym door?

We partnered with several fantastic local restaurants to create menu items designed jointly by our team and their chefs — meals our members could actually enjoy after a workout without completely undoing all the hard work they had just put in at FitMe.

The vision was that you could finish your workout, shower at the club, and head straight out with friends or family to one of our local partners for a great meal that still aligned with the healthier lifestyle you were working toward.

Looking back, it was an early attempt to connect fitness, community, and local business in a more meaningful way.

Back in 2017, we stumbled into one of the more unexpected collaborations in FitMe history.

At the time, Bath and Body Fusion was located downtown, and owner Jen teamed up with Greg to create something completely unique for FitMe — a signature scent built from natural essential oils that captured the feeling of the club itself.

That scent eventually found its way into a sea salt body scrub and a tingly muscle spray that members could take home with them.

It was a fun little pivot for us. Not because we were trying to become a skincare company, but because it reflected something we’ve always believed: FitMe was never just about equipment and workouts. It was about creating an experience and a feeling people connected with.

Looking back, it’s still one of the more creative and unusual chapters in FitMe history.

Another great memory from 10 years ago, back when FitMe seemed to become the unofficial training facility for half of professional wrestling whenever WWE rolled through town for shows at the BMO Center.

One afternoon Ashley — better known to wrestling fans as Dana Brooke — walked into FitMe with a gaggle of very large humans following behind her. I welcomed them all in, but also admitted something that probably sounded ridiculous in that moment:

“I have two boys who are 7 and 9, but honestly, I haven’t watched wrestling since I was their age. The last thing I really remember is the Hart Brothers.”

Ashley smiled and said, “Well… my dad was one of the Hart Brothers. And my uncle is Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart.”

That was not the response I was expecting.

She then handed me four ringside tickets for that night’s WWE SmackDown at the MetroCentre, so Will, Alex, our very first manager Marc Kinneman, and I all went downtown and had an absolute blast sitting with their families at ringside.

And just like that, one casual conversation at the front desk turned into one of those strange, unforgettable memories that small business ownership occasionally gives you.

Ten years later, it still feels surreal.

One of the best parts of FitMe is seeing how many families have grown up alongside this place — including the mothers on our staff who help make this community what it is every day. You all are rock stars for us and your families every day of the year.

The lessons mothers teach their children every day — strength, consistency, selflessness, resilience, and how to care for both themselves and others — are the same values that shaped this place from the beginning. We bring FitMe with us wherever we go, living lives filled with strength, fulfillment, and adventure.

Ten years ago, the Chicago Cubs captured the attention of an entire city.
And at FitMe, our members still showed up for their workouts.

Back at our original club, Stephanie put the World Series up on the wall during Spin class so nobody had to choose between the game and their commitment to themselves.

That’s always been part of the culture here. Life happens. Big moments happen. But we keep moving.

Now here we are a decade later, and the Cubs are on another tear.

Feels familiar.
