A recent medical case highlights a critical lesson for clinicians and caregivers.

A 78-year-old Rhode Island man with mild cognitive impairment experienced a rapid worsening of confusion, gait instability, and yellowing eyes (scleral icterus) over just two weeks.

Because he already had memory changes, his initial decline was chalked up to pre-existing conditions.

However, after spending time outdoors on his property, he had contracted severe Babesiosis (with a high parasitemia burden of 27%) and disseminated Lyme disease.
