Students in this interdisciplinary program will receive in-depth training in modern biotechnology and learn a range of transferable research, analytical communications and business skills. Students will also gain an appreciation of the role of biotechnology in society and the regulatory and ethical framework in which it operates. All students, staff, residents, faculty and health care professionals are invited to participate in the 31th Annual Research Day Call for Abstracts.

Research Day is a forum to highlight research conducted at the UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford along with affiliated and regional institutions. Literature reviews and program implementation projects without outcome data are not permitted.
Due to increased participation in Research Day and limited space, each primary author may submit up to two abstracts. This does not include posters where you are listed as a secondary author or collaborator.

The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, at 5 p.m. For more details about submissions and the expectations for the posters, visit the Research Day website: https://rockford.medicine.uic.edu/comp-research/research-day/

Congratulations to Naomi Thomas and Vaishnavi Guruprasad, second-year students in the Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology Program at UICOMR who received 815 Innovation Awards in the healthcare innovation category from EIGERlab at their annual event on October 25, 2025.

Thomas is working in UICOMR’s Blazer Foundation of Rockford Nanomedicine Laboratory on EVNaturopatch, a microneedle patch with phenylpropanoid-loaded exosomes used as a natural alternative for treating rheumatoid arthritis. She's mentored by Divya Bijukumar, PhD, a research assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Guruprasad is working on AtheroChec, an early diagnosis tool to detect atherosclerosis using electrochemical biosensors with biomarkers in the UICOMR Regenerative Medicine and Disability Laboratory. She's mentored by Mathew Mathew Thoppil, PhD, the Cedric W. Blazer Endowed Professor of Biomedical Sciences in the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

The 2025 Summer Science & Summer Medical Research Training (SMaRT) Forum happened on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025.

The forum marks the culmination of an intensive, eight-week paid research internship for outstanding high school and college students from across the region. Working alongside faculty researchers, these students explored critical topics in biomedical science, including cancer biology and gene regulation, neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases and biomedical engineering and organoid modeling.
