The silent treatment and stonewalling are painful because it can leave a person feeling invisible and rejected

Needing space is not the same as giving someone the silent treatment. One creates space for self reflection and regulation. The other can feel controlling and at worst abusive

Have you ever fantasized about the day when life “gets easier”.

Maybe because you’re in a season with small children, where the days slowly creep by, the to-do list never ends and where alone time is a luxury. Or maybe you’re in a season where the bills keep arriving despite the decreasing bank balance, where the same fight keeps happening with your spouse, where even getting your body to simply move feels insurmountable. Whether you’re facing grief, burnout, financial stress, parenting responsibilities, relationship conflict, or illness, longing for “easy” makes sense and is a deeply human experience.

But what if the goal wasn’t to make life easy, but instead expanding our capacity to face the challenges of life more effectively. What if the goal was to become more resourced and resilient and more compassionate towards ourselves when hardships come our way.

Becoming more resourced and resilient

All behavior makes sense in context

Avoidance isn’t always resistance

Perfection isn’t just about control

People pleasing isn’t a sign of weakness

These are likely adaptations and survival strategies that protected us in some other season of life

If they’re no longer working as intended or costing us more now, healing is recognizing that every behavior was adaptive before it was problematic. And every behavior seeks to meet a valid need

Growth is learning how to meet the need without costing us our self respect, safety or connection to others

Just because it doesn’t manifest the way you’ve seen in the movies, doesn’t mean depression isn’t present

When an adult child names a wound or hurt, and a parent responds with exaggerated offense, they could be being manipulative or it could be sign of emotional immaturity.

Regardless of the intent or underlying motive, the big feelings are real. But don’t let those big feelings be a detour from the repair. And even if it’s hard to hear (or say), stay with it. Because we only address things we want to repair with people we want to be in relationship with.

When an adult child names a wound and the parent responds with exaggerated offense, they are likely in a defensive posture. But how do you know if they are b...

Rudeness is marked by disrespect, disregard, dismissal and indifference. Accommodation is to consider and center another’s needs, experience or preference and adjusting your behavior to meet their need.

Accommodation can strengthen relationships and build emotional safety. But so does being honest about our limits and capacity. Not accommodating doesn’t automatically mean someone is being rude and doesn’t mean that the person’s needs or preferences do not matter.

Accommodation without discernment can lead to self sacrificing, self silencing, self betrayal and self neglect.

I’m always humbled to have the opportunity to support those honoring and remembering loved ones lost to su***de and simultaneously heartbroken at the reminder of all the people struggling in silence. Out of the Darkness is a reminder that you are not alone.

I used to think rest meant stepping away into quiet, solitude, and stillness.

But I’ve come to realize, rest isn’t always about retreating.
Sometimes, it’s found in laughter over lunch, shared silence during a walk, or being seen by people who hold you with ease.

Here's your invitation to reflect on how capacity, connection, and the rhythms keep us human.
