“Never Forget”

These two single words hold a powerful meaning for those of us who lived through the events of 9/11.

We remember where we were.

We remember who we searched for.

We remember waiting for survivors to be brought in for treatment.

We remember them never arriving.

For many, the events of 9/11 aren’t over.

We carry the trauma in our hearts and in our bodies.

Lives were lost and many lives forever changed.

Today we think about the children of 9/11. The babies that were in utero. The babies that were in arms. The children who grew up without knowing a parent, and those that have since had to say goodbye to love ones who died from a 9/11 related illness. Today, those children are in high school, college, or starting their own careers.

We won’t forget the way communities showed up. The volunteers who provided medical care and counseling to the survivors and first responders. The every day people who helped strangers find their way home.

We never forget.

Today we join advocates across the globe in raising awareness on World Su***de Prevention Day. This year's theme for the third and final year is "Changing The Narative On Su***de." This theme invites us to change the way we talk about su***de and open conversations with our loved ones that are often stigmatized. By starting these important conversations, we can break down barriers, increase awareness, and foster stronger cultures of understanding and support.

Tonight at 8pm we encourage you to join us in placing a candle by the window to show your support for su***de prevention, to remember a lost loved one, and for the survivors of su***de.

I’m deeply honored and grateful to be honored by the Byrne Community Center, and I also want to acknowledge the responsibility that comes with accepting an award in this community.

I don’t want this moment to suggest that my contribution is more important than the work of the people and communities who have been doing this work for years, often without the same visibility or recognition.

So I’m accepting this award with humility—and with a commitment to use the visibility it gives me to amplify the people whose voices and work deserve to be heard. I want to name the organizations, leaders, artists, organizers, and community members who are doing this work, support their efforts, and help direct attention and resources toward them.

I’m grateful to be recognized, but I hope the most meaningful thing I can do with that recognition is make the circle of recognition wider and help them to achieve their goal.

Please check out and support the other honorees. Patrick D Francis, Saul Berrios, Viper Collision, Community Soccer Club, Dr. Alvin R McDaniel Jr- Uniondale Board of Education, Rev Dr. Larry McCord New Birth Church & Dr. Sandi Webster, Chief Kevin Hicks- Uniondale Fire Department, & Andrew & Jean Morris- Sams Carribean Marketplace and the Entire Board at the Byrne Community Center

We have all been captivated by the way the trial has unfolded and brought much needed attention to maternal mental health. Lives have been lost and a family has been changed forever. The coverage of this trial has impacted all of us, parents, grandparents, mental health providers, and people from all walks of life and professions. We must uphold our responsibility to learn from this and continue working to improve care for mothers and families in this country. This is not how the story ends. Moms deserve better. Our future is dependent on it.
