What a fun and enjoyable Walk With a Doc event at the Rio in Gaithersburg yesterday! Thanks to all of those, including family, friends, and colleagues, who joined us for the brief talk on seasonal allergies and then the walk around the lake. Some even did 3 laps = 3 miles! Well done!!

Are you down for a 1 mile walk around the lake at the Rio in Gaithersburg MD? Join us Saturday September 12 at 9 am for this family friendly Walk with a Doc event. Bring your family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and walking groups. It’s totally low key with other local docs and community members. I’ll be giving a quick 5-10 minute presentation on seasonal allergies before the walk starts. You can simply show up and meet in front of Uncle Julio’s.

Do you suffer from summer and fall allergies? Ragweed season is here and they are already moderate on our local pollen counts. I saw ragweed plants while camping this weekend and had to take pictures and videos for you so you know what to look out for!

Ragweed is one of the most common causes of end of summer and fall seasonal allergies and can trigger:
Sneezing, congestion and runny nose
Itchy, watery eyes
Coughing or worsening asthma symptoms
Postnasal drip
Sinus pressure

You don’t have to see ragweed to be affected by it. Its pollen is tiny, lightweight, and easily carried by the wind.

Thanks to the US Army Centralized Allergen Extract Lab (USACAEL) in Silver Spring, MD for consistently providing us with the local pollen counts.

If you find yourself reaching for allergy medications this time of year and/or your symptoms are interfering with sleep, work, exercise, or enjoying the outdoors, it may be time to schedule an appointment to see me for a full evaluation.

No summer camps? This is what spending time with mommy in the office looks like!

Reminder: First day of MCPS and other local schools is next week. Does your child need a follow visit to review management plans and have school forms completed? If so, please call the office 240.243.6115 to schedule an appointment. We’d be happy to re-evaluate asthma and allergies (eg, food allergies) and complete the forms to have you and your family ready for the upcoming year.

“The best spring I’ve had in 40 years!”

Can you imagine being able to say that after suffering from seasonal allergies for DECADES?

Prior to starting allergy shots a few months ago, our patient had severe allergy symptoms in the spring despite taking 2 antihistamines, a prescription tablet, 2 nose sprays, and eye drops. He chose to stay indoors and initially came to me for help saying “I want to be outdoors during the spring.”

After a few months of therapy, he has:
- seen “much improvement”
- spent time outdoors for all his activities the past few months, including during the peak of spring pollen season
- cut down from taking 6 meds to 2 meds with as needed use of the other meds
- no longer checks the pollen counts
