"Are you okay - really?"
"I've noticed you seem different lately. I'm here."
"Are you thinking about hurting yourself?"

It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be asked.

In sports we talk a lot about showing up for your team. About being a good teammate. About having each other's backs when it matters most.
This is what that actually looks like off the field.

Start the conversation. Be present. Keep checking in. Not just once - consistently. Because the first ask might not be the one that breaks through. But the fifth one might.

Real support goes further than the scoreboard. Always. 💚🎗️

You can be winning and still not be okay.
became the most decorated Olympian in history. The world saw the medals, the records, and the success.

But achievement doesn’t make an athlete immune to depression, anxiety, loneliness, or struggle.
That’s an important reminder for every parent, coach, teammate, and organization working with athletes. Performance is not a measure of wellness.
An athlete can be succeeding on the scoreboard while struggling everywhere else.

At CLSI, we believe we have to learn to see the person behind the performance, ask better questions, and create environments where athletes know their value extends far beyond what they accomplish in competition.

Because athletes are human first.

We build entire programs around physical development.
Strength coaches. Nutrition plans. Recovery protocols. Film sessions. We track every physical metric imaginable.
And the mental bar? Almost always empty.

Not because it doesn't matter - but because nobody's checking it. Nobody built a system for it. Nobody made it part of the program.
Here's the truth: an athlete running on a full physical tank and an empty mental one will underperform every single time. Anxiety kills reaction time. Burnout kills effort. Unaddressed pressure kills joy - and joy is what makes them keep showing up.

Check the mental status. It's the one metric that affects all the others.
The athlete comes first. All of them - not just the physical part. đź’š

Most parents mean well in that moment.
But meaning well and doing well are two different things.

The car ride home after a loss is one of the most critical moments in a young athlete's development - and most adults spend it doing the one thing that does the most damage. Breaking it down. Listing mistakes. Making the kid feel like the loss was personal.
What they actually need in that moment is simple.

To feel loved regardless of the outcome. To be asked how they're feeling - not how you feel about the game. To hear that you're proud of how they competed, not just whether they won.

Save the coaching for the coach. In that moment - just be their parent. đź’š

September is Su***de Prevention Month. And this one is personal for us.
The “SI” in Copious Life Sports Initiative carries a second meaning for us: suicidal ideation. It’s why those two letters are crossed out in our logo. More than part of our name, they represent the future we’re fighting for.

Because this has always been about something bigger than sports. The whole person. The human behind the helmet. The kid underneath the jersey.
Athletes are human first.
But the culture of sport can teach young people to suppress, push through, and never show weakness. And that playbook, the one we hand down from generation to generation, can make the hardest moments even harder to talk about.

So this month, we’re saying it clearly:
If you’re struggling, say something. To anyone.
If someone around you seems different, ask the question. And if you’re worried they may be thinking about su***de, ask directly: “Are you thinking about su***de?”

You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to care enough to ask, listen, and stay in the conversation.

Lose on the scoreboard. Never to su***de. 💚🎗️

Before you react to the performance - remember what you don't know.
You don't know that they barely slept last night. That they had a hard week at school. That something someone said before the game is still playing on repeat in their head. That they've been carrying something for weeks that they haven't told anyone.

The score sees none of that.
It just sees the result. And results without context tell an incomplete story about a complete human being.
Pause before you react. See them before you evaluate them. Ask before you assume.

That five second pause might be the most important coaching decision you make all season. đź’š

Alphonso Smith Jr. was an All-American. An NFL player. A son, father, teammate, and so much more than what people saw on the field.

Yesterday, the sports world lost him at just 40 years old.

We will not speculate about his struggle or reduce his life to the circumstances of his death. But his passing is another painful reminder of something we believe deeply at CLSI:

Athletes are human first.

The jersey does not make someone immune to pain. Achievement does not eliminate struggle. And sometimes the people who appear strongest are carrying battles we cannot see.

Our prayers are with Alphonso’s family, friends, former teammates, and everyone who loved him.

If you are struggling, please tell someone. If someone you love seems different, ask the question. Stay in the conversation.
Because athletes are human first.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988.

"Suppress it. Be a man."

That was Kevin Love's playbook growing up. Five-time All-Star. NBA Champion. And he still hit rock bottom because nobody told him it was okay to ask for help.
Imagine how many kids on your roster are running that same playbook right now.
Change the script. It starts with you. đź’š

No two athletes are the same.
One kid carries the weight of being the family's first shot at something big. Another is quietly dealing with something at home that nobody on the team knows about. One thrives on intensity. Another shuts down the moment the room gets loud.

Same practice. Same drills. Completely different internal experience.
The coaches who change lives aren't the ones with the best playbook. They're the ones who took the time to know the person before they tried to develop the player.

Every athlete walks in carrying something you can't see on the field.
Coach the whole person. đź’š
