Some days "doing okay" doesn't look like having it figured out — it looks like showing up, even messy, even unsure. That counts too. If you're carrying more than you're letting on, you don't have to sort it out alone.

You might notice yourself swinging between two extremes — feeling wired and on edge, or completely shut down and numb. Both are outside your "window of tolerance," the zone where you feel calm enough to think clearly and stay connected to yourself and others. Everyone's window is a different size, and it can shrink under stress or trauma. Therapy can help you recognize which zone you're in and build the tools to return to your window more easily.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us learned that hard feelings mean something has gone wrong. So we push them down, talk ourselves out of them, or go quiet until they pass. But feeling bad isn't a malfunction — it's information. Staying with yourself through it is the skill worth building.

There's a reason talking to a therapist feels different than venting to a friend. Your friend hears the story. Your therapist hears the story, plus the pattern underneath it — the way you shrink in certain rooms, the thing you always apologize for, the version of this same conflict you described three months ago. That's what training is for.

You need both. They're just doing different things.

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

Thoughts of su***de are more common than most people realize — and more isolating, because so few feel they can say them out loud. If that's where you are, you are not broken and you are not a burden. Support exists, and we encourage you to reach out to someone you trust or a mental health professional.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by call or text.

The conversation you keep putting off. The boundary you haven't set. The thing you'd rather not look at directly. Avoidance is a reasonable short-term strategy and a costly long-term one — what we sidestep tends to shape our lives more than what we face. You don't have to do it alone, or all at once.

Meet Avery! She believes humans are mosaics — every experience, relationship, and season of life adding another piece to the picture. She sees counseling as a chance to explore those pieces with curiosity and compassion, helping clients better understand and accept themselves.

Avery enjoys working with teens and adults navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, identity concerns, self-esteem challenges, and life transitions. To her, counseling is more than a place to talk through problems — it's a relationship built on trust, authenticity, and connection. She works to create a space where clients can bring both their victories and their struggles and be met with support rather than judgment.

Avery is a graduate counseling intern supervised by Andrew Simmons, LPC-S, and offers sessions at reduced rates, both in person and virtually. She is currently accepting new clients — visit elevaterockwall.com to schedule a consultation today.

Not knowing what to expect can be the biggest hurdle to starting therapy. Here's the truth: there's no script, no test, and no "right way" to do it. Your first session is just a conversation — the rest unfolds from there, at your pace.

"I'm just tired" can be burnout in disguise. If rest isn't helping, and you're feeling checked out, irritable, or stretched too thin for too long, that's worth paying attention to — not pushing past. Therapy can help you figure out what's underneath it and how to recover.
