What is NR?

NR stands for Nicotinamide Riboside, a form of vitamin B3 and a precursor to NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).

NAD+ is a molecule your cells need to:

* produce energy,
* repair DNA,
* regulate metabolism,
* and support healthy cell signaling.

As we age, NAD+ levels tend to decline, which is why NR and other NAD+ precursors have become popular in aging and longevity research.

How NR becomes NAD+ in the body?

Your body converts NR into NAD+ through a short biochemical pathway:

NR -> NMN -> NAD+

More specifically:

1. NR enters cells
2. Enzymes called NR kinases (NRKs) convert NR into NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide)
3. NMN is then converted into NAD+

This is part of what’s called the NAD+ salvage pathway, where the body recycles vitamin B3-related compounds into usable NAD+.

What NAD+ actually does?

NAD+ acts a bit like a cellular “electron shuttle” in metabolism.

One of its main jobs is helping mitochondria turn food into ATP (cellular energy):

* NAD+ accepts electrons during metabolism
* It becomes NADH
* NADH then helps generate ATP in mitochondria

Without enough NAD+, cells struggle to efficiently produce energy.
