Michele Criswell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michele Criswell of Oak Ridge, TN on August 10, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with dementia.

She was born to Arthur Paul Marquardt and Pearl Elizabeth Gangwer in Oak Ridge, TN. They preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Criswell, her two daughters, Melanie Reed and Marcy (Gene) Cooper, her grandchildren, Leah Cooper, Sean Tucker Jr., Chris (Makenzie) Cooper, Hayley (Chad) Riffe, Jorden Reed, her great grandchildren, Aubree & Brantlee Caffee and Lennox Cooper, her two sisters, Adele Crabtree, Molly (Harold) Hayes, her sister in law Phyllis (Victor) Hearne and many nieces and nephews.

Michele’s professional journey began as a music teacher at a private school where she inspired students by sharing her love for music. She later offered private piano and flute lessons. She excelled in her role as an administrative assistant for several companies before retiring form Paccar Parts Division.

A woman of deep faith, Michele was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and later Pinecrest Baptist in Georgia before returning to her roots in Tennessee. She was known as “Granny Mac” by the church children. She shared the love of Jesus with all especially at church through Bible School, Bible Drills and several mission trips. She loved singing in the choir and playing her flute in the orchestra. She often reminded the grandchildren of the love of Jesus by saying, “I love you, but do you know who else loves you, Jesus does”.

In her leisure time, Michele found joy in sewing, crocheting, tatting, playing the piano, organ, flute, piccolo, and accordion. She enjoyed reading, playing Boggle, card games and spending time with family and friends.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of the memory care unit of The Glen at Oak Ridge and to the Shalom Hospice for their care during Michele’s final days.

The funeral will be held from the Chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, TN on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 7:00 pm. Family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The graveside service will be held at Anderson Memorial Gardens in Clinton, TN on Sunday August 17,2026 at 2:00pm. Evans Mortuary of Rockwood, Tennessee is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Michele Criswell.

Carolyn Christine Ledford Oney

Ms. Carolyn Christine Ledford Oney, age 95, of Spring City, TN passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026 with her family by her side. She was born on May 31, 1931 to Festus Adolf Ledford and Dorothy Mae Sweat Ledford in Lancing, TN. She married her best friend, Oscar Oney, and spent several wonderful years with him. She loved sewing and became a seamstress for several years. Christine loved to garden, cook and go on walks with her family as much as possible. She is preceded in death by her parents: F.A. Maverick "Kayli Bug" Grant

Maverick “Kayli Bug” Grant, age 23, of Rockwood, went home to be with her Lord and Savior after a courageous fight.

Maverick was born on March 26, 2003. She was a member of Loveland Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she gave her life to the Lord. Her faith was a very special part of her life, and she found comfort in knowing that God was always with her. She felt a deep calling to serve others and loved doing mission work.

Mav had a beautiful, loving spirit and a personality that could light up a room. She loved to laugh and had a way of finding joy in the little things. She loved playing games, going out to eat and, of course, having DoorDash bring her favorite foods to the hospital. She treasured spending time with the family and friends she loved so dearly and cherished every opportunity to make memories with them.

One of the most precious chapters of Maverick’s life was becoming “Momma KK” to her beloved son, Liam (Will). He was her greatest joy and held a place in her heart that words could never fully express. He was one of her greatest blessings in life.

Music and making TikTok videos were special to Maverick and became a form of therapy and an outlet for her. They brought her comfort, creativity, and happiness, especially during difficult times. She loved being silly and capturing moments that brought joy to those around her.

Although her time on earth was far too short, she left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and generosity. She will be remembered for her selflessness, heart of gold, and love for Jesus.

Until we meet again, Kayli Bug. You are deeply loved, deeply missed, and will never be forgotten.

Virginia T Evans

Virginia T. Evans, age 99 of Rockwood, went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, August 9th, 2026. She was born on June 29th, 1927. She retired after 34 years of service with the state of Tennessee as the office manager for the Tennessee Dept. of Employment Security. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church in the Eureka community of Rockwood, TN. She served the church in a number of roles, and taught adult Sunday school for 40+ years.

After she retired from the state, she was involved in the operations of Evans Mortuary with her son and late husband since 1976.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Charlie Teague & Alma Keith Teague; husband: Thomas R. "Bob" Evans Sr; brother: Jimmie "Bud" Teague; daughter-in-law: Hyda Evans. She is survived by:

John Logan Newman

John Logan Newman, affectionately known as Johnny by his family and friends, was born on June 23, 1961, and passed away on August 4, 2026.

John was the son of the late Junior and Sue Newman of Daysville, Rockwood. He graduated from Rockwood High School in 1979, where he made many lifelong friends and treasured memories. As a teenager, he was a member of Cardiff Baptist Church.

In 1978, John began his career with Kroger in Harriman as a produce clerk. When the store relocated to Rockwood in 1980, he became an assistant produce manager. In 2005, Kroger moved to Midtown, where John worked in many different departments throughout the store and became increasingly active in the union.

John loved talking with people and never met a stranger. He enjoyed laughing with customers and coworkers alike and was known for carrying on conversations while walking customers to their cars—even if it meant taking an extra smoke break. One of his special customers and dear friends was Curtis Anderson. John had a gift for listening, and anyone who knew him knew they could always talk to him.

In the early 1980s, John became a union steward for UFCW Local 1995. During his 43-year career with Kroger, he proudly walked the picket line twice and was always willing to stand up for fellow employees, even representing non-members when they needed someone in their corner. In 2005, he was elected as one of the vice presidents of UFCW Local 1995. John was a man of strong convictions who was never afraid to speak up when he believed something was not in the best interest of the employees he represented.

While working at Kroger in the early 2000s, John also owned and operated Logan's Guitar Company on Ruritan Road in Harriman. He sold guitars, other musical instruments, and supplies while also providing repair services, earning the nickname "Roane's Rockin' Repair Man." John gave guitar lessons to many students, all of whom made him proud. He especially enjoyed teaching Chase Hamil and was particularly proud of his student C.J. Osborne and his accomplishments as a musician.

John retired from Kroger in 2021 and cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He loved taking walks, teaching them to play guitar, singing with them, and showing them how to shoot bows and arrows and safely handle fi****ms. He treasured the quiet moments spent with his beloved wife. One of his greatest joys was gardening, especially growing tomatoes and okra alongside his granddaughter Layla, who was truly the pride and joy of his life.

John loved reading biographies and history books and especially enjoyed Gerald Largen's articles in the Roane County News. His love of music spanned from the early Grand Ole Opry to The Beatles, and he found great joy in writing, playing, and recording his own music. In his younger years, he also enjoyed running and had the opportunity to run a marathon in Townsend in 2000.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Junior and Sue Newman; his brother, Kayo Crass; his sister, Tommy Newman; and his grandson, Barrett Davis.

He is survived by Tresia D. Newman, love of 33 years and wife of 15 years; his brother, Bobby Crass (Teri) of Lafayette, Tennessee; his sister, Susan Roberts of Maryville, Tennessee; his children, Brad and Mindy Davis, Kyle and Allison Davis, and Sara and Will McCluen; his grandchildren, Isaac Davis, Caleb and Sarah Davis, Cruz Davis, Zoe Davis, Layla and Molly McCluen; and his great-grandson, Winston Davis. Six nieces and nephews and a host of extended family friends and members of the community.

John will be remembered for his kindness, unwavering principles, love of music, dedication to his family and friends, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 20th, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 pm ET at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, TN. A celebration of life service will follow in the chapel. Officiating Rev. Jimmy Banken. Cremation arrangements have been made and a private interment will be held at a later date. Evans Mortuary is serving the family of Mr. John Logan Newman.

Jerry Henery Lunsford Jr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Jerry, who passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026 at Parkwest Medical Center, Surrounded by his family. Jerry was born on July 20, 1969 in Memphis, TN to his parents Jerry H. Lunsford Sr. and Helen Louise Flynn.

Jerry was a loving husband and Dad for the time he was with us. He grew up in Harriman, TN. Since he could walk, he worked along side his cousin ,John Lunsford, with Lunsford Masonry and even laid some of the stone at Riverfront Park. As a young man, he boxed and won several trophies in the sport. He loved it. He also worked at Bayou Steel for years. Jerry was an advocate and lover of our Tennessee Vols. Jerry went to church at Edgewood Baptist off Gallaher Rd in Kingston, where will hold a celebration of life at a later date.

Jerry is preceded in death by his dad, Jerry H. Lunsford Sr; his wife, Wilma Dean Currier Lunsford; his aunt, Helen Lunsford; His two sisters, Malissa Gayle Peters and Anita Hazel Waldrop; and his great grandson Carter Edward Beard.

Jerry's survivors include his two sisters; Dana Sieber of Harriman, and Cathy Godsey of Rockwood; a brother, James Ernest Lunsford of Rockwood; Children, April Joy Beard of Rockwood, Darrell B. Griffin of Rockwood, Lora Dene Hyett of Oakdale, Nakema Dawn Denny of Rockwood; and 12 grandchildren and a slew of great grandchildren, nieces, and cousins.

Suzanne Marie Belcher

Suzanne Marie Belcher, age 80 of Harriman, passed away on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, at her home. She was born on December 22, 1945, in Indiana. She attended Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman. She was an avid reader and those who knew her knew that she loved her jewelry and the color purple. She also worked for many years as an underwriter with Farm Bureau insurance. She is preceded in death by her parents and 2 children: Scott Kincaid & Tammy Archibald; grandchildren: Amber Kincaid, Jake Archibald, and Josh Archibald; and her husband: Mark Belcher. Opal loved going to the beach, crossword puzzles, shopping, and of course her sweets! David Scott Kirkland, age 53 of Rockwood, passed away on Friday, July 31st, 2026. He was born on October 5th, 1972. He worked as a welder here locally in Harriman. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, and go camping. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He had been attending Valley View Baptist Church in Harriman where he gave his heart to the Lord and was saved.
