Delores Tucker Worley

Delores Tucker Worley passed away on September 2, 2026. She was born August 22, 1934 in Alleghany County, VA and was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil M. Tucker, Sr. and Maude Kitt Tucker; her husband of 49 years, Claude W. Worley, Jr. (Preacher); brother, Cecil M. Tucker, Jr., and sister, Gwen Tucker Dudley.

She is survived by her daughter, Crystal F. Worley (Robin) of Ferrum, VA, her brothers, Stewart G. Tucker, and Franklin D. Tucker; special niece, Nika Davidson (Ned) of Newport News, VA. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Delores worked at H. O. Canfield as an inspector for 44 years. She enjoyed many friendships while she worked there and made lifelong friends, Ellen Long, Rita Unroe, and Nancy Higgins. She was a devoted daughter, wife, sister and mother. She loved to can vegetables, mow grass and decorate for her favorite holiday, Christmas. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them and chatting on the phone. She will be missed by those who loved her, especially her daughter. My heart breaks, but my soul rejoices because God chose her to be my mom.

Many thanks to Susan McClung (Brian) who cared for her before her decline and Karen Pigg (special caregiver with Thriving Well at Home) during the end of her life. Also special friends, Melissa Wray and the Gonzalez Torres family.

Lewis Thomas "Tommy" Abshire

Lewis “Tommy” Thomas Abshire, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 28, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born on September 16, 1933, in the town of Boones Mill later living out his life in Wirtz, Va. Tommy lived a life marked by dedication, humor, and deep connections with those around him.

Tommy was the son of the late Harry T. and Myrtle Nunley Abshire. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty Minnix Abshire, with whom he shared many treasured years. In the years following Betty's passing, Tommy found companionship and joy in the company of Carolyn Walker and her entire family. She was a devoted partner of nearly 40 years.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Tommy served his nation with honor and integrity. After his military service, he embarked on a fruitful career at Eli Lilly, dedicating 35 years to the company before enjoying a well-earned retirement. Retirement, however, was merely a new chapter for Tommy, who started a small landscaping business that kept him engaged and active for the rest of his days.

Tommy’s quick wit and humor were legendary. Those who knew him delighted in his unpredictable sayings and stories. He possessed an uncanny ability to make fast friends, sharing genuine interest and warmth with everyone he encountered. In the Abshire family, if there was ever a need, Tommy was the man with a solution—he always "had a guy for that."

He is survived by a loving family who will carry on his legacy: his brother GK Junior Abshire and sister-in-law Shirley, sister Esther Bunch, children Cynthia Ulrey and husband Denny, and Todd Abshire and wife Teke. His grandchildren, Brice Ulrey and wife Meg, and Brooke Peters and husband Rick, along with six adored great-grandchildren Andrew, Charlie, Frank, Laine, Emery, and Reese who knew him affectionately as Pawpaw. Tommy's family was the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

A graveside service for Tommy will be held at 2:00 on September 2, 2026, at Franklin Memorial Park, 21440Virgil H. Goode Hwy, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Family and friends will gather to honor a remarkable life of a man who touched many hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations be made in Tommy's memory to a charity of your choice, continuing his legacy of kindness and generosity.

Tommy Abshire will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit lives on in the laughter, love, and warmth he brought to every life he touched

Kathleen "Kathy" Brunk Goad

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Goad, who gently entered the embrace of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 23rd.

Kathy was the beloved and devoted wife of Gary Goad for an extraordinary sixty years, a testament to enduring love and partnership that inspired all who knew them. She dedicated many years of service as a medical transcriptionist with the former Wolfe Medical Clinic in Rocky Mount, Virginia, where her precision and commitment were highly valued.

Originally a native of Athens, West Virginia, Kathy found her cherished forever home in Wirtz, Virginia, alongside her devoted husband, Gary. She cultivated a life rich in love and simple pleasures. Her spirit truly bloomed in her vibrant vegetable and flower gardens, where her green thumb brought forth beauty and bounty. Family was the cornerstone of her world; she found immense joy in creating lasting memories during treasured beach trips and in every precious moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives she touched deeply.

Kathy was also an artisan of the heart, meticulously handcrafting exquisite quilts. Each stitch was a testament to her boundless love and care, creating not just blankets, but warm, tangible expressions of her affection that became treasured family heirlooms.

The family extends its deepest gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the dedicated staff at Harmony Memory Care and the comforting support from Genteva Hospice Services during Kathy's final days. Her warmth, love, and gentle spirit will be profoundly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

She was born in Dott, West Virginia on July 7, 1942 a daughter of the late Albert and Dorothy Brunk. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Evelyn Fortner, Russell Brunk, Wayne Brunk, Douglas Brunk, Delorice Brunk, Joyce Brunk and Helen Brunk. Kathy retired from Carilion Clinic as a medical secretary working at the Wolfe Medical Group and was a member of Burnt Chimney United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Bentley Goad; son, Kevin Bentley Goad (Nancy) and their children, Ali Bell (Wes), Gary L. Goad (Ashley); her great-grandchildren, Grayson Bell, Ainsley Bell, Emery Goad and Chase Grimes; her daughter, Amy G. Wells (Mike) and their children, Kathleen Wells and Emily Wells.

At this time there will not be any services.

Allen Herman Mills

Allen Herman Mills age 88 of Ferrum, Virginia, peacefully passed away on the morning of August 18, 2026 at his home.

He was born in Danville, Virginia to the late Bernard and Beatrice Mills and grew up in the Stony Mill area of Pittsylvania County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Phillip Wright; son-in-law, Robert Yeatts, Sr.; father and mother-in-law, Carl and Alease Moore; brother-in-law and nephew, Linton and Jason Moore.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Debbie, of the home, daughters Janet Yeatts and Melody (NP) Hyler, both of Danville, VA, Jeanne Witt (Paul) of Penhook, VA, sister Linda Marshall (Henry) of Danville, VA, sisters-in-law June Strader (Percy) of Reidsville, NC, Rita Miller (Ray) of Keeling, VA and brother-in-law Charlie Moore (Pam) of Roxboro, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren Erin Thackston, Emily Wright, Robert Yeatts, Jr., Mary Katherine Francisco, Maggie Lucas, Steven, Laura and Patrick Witt, Zacrye Porter, Aidan Hyler and Ivan Clark; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and fans across the country and around the world.

Allen’s parents worked at Dan River Mills and raised to***co. Around 1940, he had fond memories of resting with his father after lunch and listening to Charlie Monroe’s Noon Day Jamboree on WSJA Radio. In 1942, he rode with his father in a 1931 Model A to see Charlie Monroe in person. In 1953, Allen bought a Bell Comet mandolin from a local pawn shop and began to play music with school buddies. In 1955, he joined the Navy and with a Navy friend, attended the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree where he saw the Osborne Brothers with Red Allen.

In 1957, he received an honorable discharge from the Navy, followed by six years in the reserves. After returning to Danville, he purchased a new Gibson A50 mandolin for the sum of $90.00 and learned to play rhythm. One night, the band had no bass player. Allen’s uncle loaned him $50.00 and drove him to Rocky Mount, VA, where he bought a 1947 Kay bass fiddle.

In 1960, Allen’s career led him to the Easter Brothers and to King Records Studio in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1962 he teamed up with another dance band, the Country T-Birds and recorded one 45 rpm record published on a Reno-Smiley label.

After departing from the T-Birds in 1973, Allen and Gene Parker met Dempsey Young. They joined with Roger Handy to form the Lost and Found Band. In 1975, their first album, First Time Around, was recorded. Through the 1980’s through the mid 2000’s, they recorded on the Rebel Records label and in 2002, recorded a Bluegrass Unlimited #1 song, Johnston’s Grocery Store. Music provided Allen a full-time career, taking him across the United States and Canada since 1977. Allen joined the ranks of such noteworthy musicians as Patsy Cline, Roy Clark, Charlie Waller and many others, being inducted into the Virginia Music Hall of Fame on September 16, 2005.

Many notable musicians played with the Lost and Found Band for over 43 years, with Allen always at the helm, until his retirement in 2017.

He was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association with the Distinguished Achievement Award in 2019, in recognition of Pioneering Accomplishment that have fostered Bluegrass Music’s image and broadened Its Recognition and Accessibility. On July 6, Allen was informed that the Lost and Found Band will be inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in October 2026.

Other accolades Allen received include being named a Kentucky Colonel on June 14, 1999. A Kentucky Colonel is the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, recognizing an individual’s noteworthy accomplishments, community service and outstanding dedication to others.

Also included in his prior work history; driving for Roy Stone Trucking Company, Co-owner of Mills-O’Dell auto-body shop, running a small music store and as a radio DJ, all in the Martinsville, VA area.

The family sincerely thanks everyone for the prayers, support, food and visits during his declining health. A special thank you to Carilion Clinic Hospice – Franklin.

A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 from 3-7 PM at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, 62 Market Place Dr., Rocky Mount, VA 24151. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 3-6 PM at Atkinson Farms Barn, 777 Atkinson Rd., Danville, VA 24540. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments. Lisa Renae Perdue

Lisa Renae Perdue age 57 of Glade Hill passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026 at her home. She was a selfless woman who would have given her last penny if someone else needed it. She knew the importance of being kind to everyone, for you never know what someone is going through. She was a very devoted mother. She is preceded in death by her mother Betty June Hall Perdue, her father Walter Darrell Perdue, and her nephew Christian Moreland. She is survived by her daughter Haylee June Smith, her partner in life Gary Lynn Smith, her brother Darrell Wayne Perdue, her sister in law Tina Marie Perdue, her nephews Brian Strong, Timothy Perdue, and her nieces Ceecee Maxton, Destiny Pugh, and Haliey Pugh.

Funeral arrangements will be conducted 12:00 PM Friday, August 21, 2026 at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Buckles officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park where she will be buried next to her parents. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 11:00 AM.

Sylvia Manning

Sylvia Manning, born October 19, 1939, in Floyd, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, in the comfort of her loving home, with her devoted nephew and caregiver, Tim Radford, by her side.

Sylvia was a hardworking woman throughout her life. She spent many years working in factory employment before earning her retirement. She understood the value of an honest day's work, perseverance, and making the most of the life she was given.

Above all, Sylvia loved the Lord and loved her family. Her faith was an important part of who she was and remained a source of comfort and strength throughout her life.

The final three years of Sylvia's life became a particularly special chapter. She lived with her loving nephew, Tim Radford, who lovingly cared for her and became her traveling companion. Together, Sylvia and Tim traveled through multiple states, visited new places, saw new things, and shared experiences that created memories Tim will treasure for the rest of his life.

Those years were about much more than traveling. They were about companionship, family, laughter, everyday moments, and making sure Sylvia continued to experience and enjoy life. The bond they shared was one of love, devotion, and friendship, and it remained strong until her final moments at home.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Patricia Snodgrass and Sandra Trail; her brother, Billy Radford; her loving nephew and caregiver, Tim Radford; and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with extended family and friends who will cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her son, Junior Trail, and her brothers, Shelton Radford, Bobby Radford, and Ray Radford. Shelton was the oldest of the siblings, while Ray was the youngest.

Sylvia's life cannot be measured simply by the years between her birth and passing. It is better measured by the people she loved, the work she did, the family she raised, the places she traveled, the memories she created, and the lives she touched along the way.

Those fortunate enough to have known Sylvia will remember a hardworking Virginia woman who loved the Lord, loved her family, and continued experiencing life and making memories throughout her later years.

On August 13, Sylvia's earthly journey came to a peaceful close in the place she knew as home, with someone who loved and cared for her beside her.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bud Nichols officiating. Burial will be private. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 2:00 PM.

Harry B. Jarrett

Harry B. Jarrett, age 93, of Moneta, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Born on January 16, 1933, in Martinsville, Harry was the beloved son of the late Morris and Mary Susan Adams Jarrett. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jane Barbour, his step-son Rick, his step-daughter Cheryl (Rick Howell), and his brothers Curtis, Marshall, and his sister Clayton.

Harry's life was defined by unwavering devotion to his family, his remarkable achievements, and a spirited zest for life. He is survived by his cherished wife, Norma Lee Stewart Jarrett, whose companionship brought him great joy, especially in their shared passion for boating during their golden years together. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Dave (Linda), his daughter Leigh Jarrett Reynolds (Barton), his granddaughter Taylor Jarrett-Bryan (Cole), grandson David "Alex" Alexander, Brady (Katlyn) Samuel, Charlie (Samantha) and Austin, as well as his great-grandchildren Ellie, Jackson, Sammy, and Charlotte. Harry’s legacy also endures through numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and the many friends whose lives he touched with kindness and integrity.

Proudly serving his country, Harry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served until 1955. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal before his honorable discharge in December 1955. His commitment to service exemplified the steadfastness and sense of duty that would carry through every chapter of his life.

Education and perseverance were hallmarks of Harry’s journey. A graduate of Virginia Tech, he pursued further studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey, earning an MBA. His career in banking was marked by dedication, innovation, and leadership, culminating in his retirement as Vice President of Marketing for Wells Fargo. Among his many accomplishments, Harry notably introduced Southwest Virginia residents to the very first ATM in the 1970s—an enduring testament to his forward-thinking spirit and commitment to progress.

In addition to his professional and personal achievements, Harry was a passionate golfer, distinguishing himself with the extraordinary feat of five holes in one. Whether on the green, spending time on the water with Norma, or sharing stories with loved ones, Harry approached life with generosity, humility, and infectious enthusiasm.

The Jarrett family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Carilion Hospice, especially Helen, Jill and Juilann and the staff of Runk and Pratt at Smith Mountain Lake for their compassionate care and kindness during Harry’s residence there.

William Thomas "Tom" Hamlin, Jr

William Thomas Hamlin, Jr, known to all as Tom, peacefully left this world in his sleep on August 10, 2026 at the age of 82 years old. His final days were spent at Smith Mountain Lake with his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary Baker Hamlin, and were sprinkled with frequent visits from friends and family members.

Tom was born to William Thomas Hamlin Sr (Bill) and Sarah Sanders Hamlin in Ardmore, Oklahoma at an Army hospital. His father served in the US Army during WWII. Bill was transferred to the Pentagon, so their family lived in Arlington for Tom’s first two years of life. When Bill retired from the Army to work for the B.C. Remedy Company as the west coast sales manager the family moved to Whittier, California for 8 years. When Tom was 10 years old, his father was transferred Durham, NC, where he completed the remainder of his education.

A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, he loved Carolina basketball. He was a runner in high school and an avid tennis player for much of his life.

He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, proudly serving our country in Germany and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star Award for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations against Hostile Forces. Following his years in the Army he joined State Farm Insurance in Greensboro, NC where he spent his entire career. He became a Claims Superintendent and turned down career promotions for the sake of stability for his family.

Tom was faithful in service to God through his church home at First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro serving as an Elder and various other roles for many years, and then in later years at Trinity Ecumenical Church in Moneta, VA where he retired with Mary at Smith Mountain Lake. He served with Habitat for Humanity, the Lions Club, the Sheriff’s Department, the United States Power Squadron, Lake Christian Ministries, and more. He exemplified servant leadership.

Tom had a gentle spirit. He was kind, compassionate, generous and servant-hearted. He was deeply loved by many people. He was a quiet leader, a great listener, thoughtful, intelligent and courageous. He respectfully waited to offer his opinion until it was requested.

He was humorous and quick to offer a witty response, lightening the moment to make others laugh. He frequently held two fingers behind anyone’s head to give bunny ears in a photo.

Nature brought him great joy. He enjoyed camping, sailing, and delighted in yardwork. He spent hours planting flowers, pruning roses and taking meticulous care of his yard. He loved his riding lawn mower. He faithfully fed the birds and enjoyed the rhythms of lake life at Smith Mountain Lake.

Tom is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary, his daughter, Sara Beth (Justin) Verm, and son, Jonathan (Julie) Hamlin, and seven grandchildren: Andrew Verm, Hank Hamlin, Caroline Verm, Ava Hamlin, Susanna Verm, Worth Hamlin, and Mary Claire Verm. Tom’s legacy also endures through numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and the many friends whose lives he touched with kindness and integrity.

A worship service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held at Trinity Ecumenical Church in Moneta VA to celebrate his life on September 26, 2026 at 2pm immediately followed by a reception.

Valerie Beatrice Attina Beck

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Valerie Attina-Beck on Friday, July 24, 2026 at the age of 67.

Valerie was deeply loved by her family and friends and will always be remembered for her beautiful heart, her kindness, and her generosity. She possessed a rare gift for making everyone feel welcomed and valued leaving a lasting imprint on every heart she touched. Whether someone knew her for a lifetime or only a brief moment, they were better for having crossed her path.

At the center of Val's life was her unwavering love for her husband Ken, her family and animals, whom she gave herself wholeheartedly. She also shared an extraordinary lifelong friendship with her cherished best friend, Cindy, a bond built on love, loyalty and laughter.

Val's memory will live on in the hearts of all of us who had the privilege to know her and love her deeply.
