📣URGENT📣call for help in the way of public comment:
Michigan Medicaid has proposed coverage for licensed midwives. Many of my clients have asked about this, others have not been able to become clients because it didn't exist.
There are two proposed policies. You can read them here:

Fee-for-Service Coverage of Licensed Midwifery Services. https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/-/media/Project/Websites/mdhhs/Assistance-Programs/Medicaid-BPHASA/Public-Comment/2026/2609-Maternal-P.pdf?fbclid=IwY2xjawRgWFJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFVWXVjbktlaXdlUmJqY1Jxc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHgnnaZb2Nh9-nJfEysXSTg2ZgTaK7vMiI-6hlfB-uZVqj5Z-j9SNZjT-VtF1_aem_sLT9wS97DbrN3kigKxKXYg

Coverage of Planned Homebirth Services and update to Medicaid Covered Doula Services.

There is an email on the first page of each for Janelle Troutman. PLEASE send comments on the proposed policies to her by May 13.
It would be wonderful to increase access for Medicaid carrying families, however, there are some concerns with the policies. Especially how they limit the scope of the midwife pertaining to things like multiple gestation (twins) and breech delivery. We are allowed to attend these births in the state of Michigan, and midwives fought hard for that. Please let the state know you do not want your access to quality midwifery care limited because of insurance policy. Another issue raised by many is the low reimbursement rates for all providers. You could also let them know about that!

If you are concerned about increasing health care costs and the burden on the system, SO AM I. Please know this does NOT add anything to the Medicaid budget. About half the births in this country are already paid for by Medicaid, this bill and others like it will not increase that. If anything, midwifery care will improve outcomes, leading to healthier families who need less healthcare.

Spent yesterday preparing, hoping that this would turn out to be nothing or not as bad as they called for. I don't think I am getting that wish. Stay safe and warm, and cross fingers for your midwife friends that babies stay in for a day or so 🤞

Oh Eugene 🤩
Did your baby have hair when they were born?

This baby giraffe’s hair is stealing more attention than his birth announcement

A baby giraffe named Eugene was born on January 17 at the Toledo Zoo, weighing approximately 130 pounds at birth. He is the first calf for his mother Lily, while his father is Rocket. Zoo officials confirmed that both mother and baby are healthy and doing well.

Eugene’s name was selected by the public, and he quickly became a social media favorite thanks to a distinctive tuft of hair on top of his head. Photos of the newborn giraffe have circulated widely online, drawing attention from animal lovers across the country.

The Toledo Zoo says Eugene is thriving and continuing to bond with his mother.

The phrase "emotional rollercoaster" got tossed around a lot in my life this week. It's been a wild few days for myself and some of my closest friends. In labor, we encourage moms to take a break between contractions. That is how this morning feels. Waiting for the next wave, planning how I can stay on top of it. Slow coffee, fresh cream from a dear client, and the sweetest little Toad 🐸😽

Well, I'll tell you what. It's been near about 9 months since our historic ice storm, and this Up North midwifery team is in full baby boom mode. If we have similar conditions this weekend, please book early for September 😂

As of now (Wednesday evening, 12/17) temperatures are expected to be in the 40s with rain Thursday afternoon and evening before dropping below freezing with high winds early morning and throughout the day Friday. It may be a good idea to make whatever preparations you need now and stay off the roads if possible when the weather changes. Roads would be expected to be slick with conditions possibly similiar to early April of 2025 🫣. So now would be a good time to fuel your vehicles and generators, charge cell phones and external batteries or other devices, make sure to have non-perishable food on hand, and make other neccessary preperations. If you experience a power outage call your power company to report it and follow automated menu prompts. Please be patient with utility and public works / road workers. If reporting a power line down please do not approach and advise us if anything is on fire or if the line is arcing or sparking. As in the past, if we become inundated with down power line calls you may expierience delays in calltaking or service. If you have power issues please contact your specific provider with one of the numbers below. Please save them in your phone for future reference along with our non-emergency number: (989) 354-9111
