A lot can change in 68 years.

Names change. Programs grow. Communities change. Even logos get a new look. 😉

But for more than 68 years, Choices for People has remained focused on something that still matters just as much today:

Creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to have choices, participate in their communities, and build lives that are meaningful to them.

We’re proud of how far Choices for People has come, and even more excited about where we’re going.

Because after 68 years, the work continues to come back to the same thing:

People. Choice. Community. Possibility. 💙

Employer Education: Myth vs. Fact

MYTH: Workplace accommodations are usually expensive.

FACT: They often aren’t.

According to the Job Accommodation Network, 61% of employers surveyed who provided cost information said the accommodation they made cost nothing. For accommodations with a one-time expense, the median cost was $300.

An accommodation might be as straightforward as adjusting a schedule, changing the way information is provided, modifying a policy or finding another practical solution that allows an employee to do their job successfully.

Creating inclusive workplaces doesn’t always require a big investment.

Sometimes it starts with being willing to ask:

“What do you need to be successful here?”

And that’s a conversation more workplaces should be having.

Getting the job isn’t always the finish line.

Did you know Choices for People’s Employment Services can continue beyond helping an individual find employment?

Support can also include on-the-job training, job retention, navigating employee and employer relationships, and continuing support as an individual grows in their role.

Because starting a job is one accomplishment.

Building confidence, learning new skills, working through challenges and succeeding over time is another.

Employment support should be built around the individual and what they need to reach their goals, and those needs can look different for everyone.

Community inclusion is more than going on an outing.

A trip to the store can mean practicing decision-making and money skills.

Volunteering can mean building connections and discovering new interests.

Going out for lunch can mean choosing where to eat, ordering independently and spending time with friends.

Participating in a community event can mean meeting new people and becoming more comfortable in new environments.

Sometimes what looks like an ordinary day is full of opportunities to build independence, confidence and connection.

At Choices for People, community participation is about helping our individuals be active members of their communities in ways that are meaningful to them.

There’s often more happening behind the fun than you might realize.

When you see pictures from a Day Services outing, activity, volunteer project or event, you’re seeing the fun part, and we definitely want our individuals to have fun!

But those experiences can also create opportunities to work on everyday skills.

Communication.
Decision-making.
Social connection.
Independence.
Exercise.
Learning something new.
Helping in the community.

Choices for People’s Day Services are built around person-centered plans, which means those experiences can look very different depending on each individual’s interests, needs and goals.

So yes, sometimes it looks like a really fun day.

And sometimes a really fun day is also a really meaningful one. 💙

You may hear the term “person-centered” a lot in disability services.

But what does it actually mean?

It starts with something pretty simple:

The person is at the center.

Their goals.
Their preferences.
Their interests.
Their choices.
Their life.

At Choices for People, support isn’t about deciding what someone else should want. It’s about listening, providing resources and support, and helping our individuals make informed choices about the lives they want to build.

Because independence doesn’t mean doing everything alone.

Sometimes it means having the right support to make your own decisions.

Pizza tastes even better when you make it yourself! 🍕💙

Ryan and Carolyn Buschjost recently stopped by and spent some time with our individuals, teaching them how to make their own pizzas completely from scratch.
From preparing the dough to adding toppings and putting it all together, everyone had a chance to learn something new, get hands-on, and enjoy the finished product afterward.

A big thank you to Ryan and Carolyn for sharing their time, skills, and plenty of pizza-making fun with us!

We’re pretty sure this is one lesson no one minded practicing. 🍕😊

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. 💙

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent,” and we think that message is worth talking about.

Employment is about so much more than earning a paycheck. A good job can create opportunities for independence, confidence, connection, growth, and being an active part of the community.

At Choices for People, our Employment Services are designed around the individual, from exploring career interests and preparing for work to finding employment and receiving support on the job.

Because everyone deserves the opportunity to discover where their talents can take them.

This month, we’re celebrating the value, talent, and contributions of individuals with disabilities in workplaces throughout our communities.
