Ms. Maria Carolina "Carito" Zavala

Carolina “Carito” Zavala, a beloved mother, abuela, and patient, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026. She was surrounded by her closest loved ones.

Born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Carito lived a truly remarkable life, having survived a 12- year civil war in her home country, several natural disasters, and various health crises, among other things. Devoted to a strong sense of family, she dedicated herself to providing whatever was needed to those around her, even in times of extreme economic instability. Despite all this, she was always known to have a smile on her face and a positive outlook towards life. Her greatest joy and fulfillment in life was found in learning new things, watching exciting telenovelas, and ending her days surrounded by family, all partaking in a freshly brewed Cafecito and delicious pan de dulce.

Carito spent her final 9 years as a patient of Cartersville Piedmont and Floyd Medical Center, where she formed many dear friendships with her care team and was known by all for her warm spirit and kindness. Carito’s life was a true testament to the strength, determination, resilience, and resourcefulness to which she guided the lives of herself and others. Her presence will be greatly missed.

Carito is preceded in death by her adoptive mother Sonia Trinidad Zavala, her grandmother Matilda Guzman, and her dear brother Jorge Alberto Guzman.

Her legacy lives on through her children: Katherine “Kat” Alessandra Calderon-Zavala, Saul Isaias Calderon-Zavala, Sonia Denisse (Cody Roger) Westbrooks, and Ariana Carolina (John Duncan) Calkwood Calderon-Zavala. She is also survived by her loving cousin Yanira Esmeralda (Steve) Turgeon (née Zavala), who shared in her life’s many joys and sorrows and who she considered a child of her own. Her love and joy permeate through her grandchildren: Alexander Calderon, Magnolia “Maggie” Dee Calderon, Maria Juliet Westbrooks, Carolina “Lina” Rose Calderon, and Gabriel Winford Westbrooks, who brought immeasurable joy and happiness into her life.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Carito’s life will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, June 1st , 2026, in the chapel of Reynolds Funeral Home, 5865 New Calhoun Hwy., Rome, Georgia.

Friends, family, and care staff are invited to gather for visitation from 4:00-6:00 pm prior to the service, providing an opportunity to share memories and offer condolences.

While we can never encompass everything about Carito in a single obituary, we will fondly remember her joy, laughter, kindness, and unwavering love, as well as her warm spirit, dedication to others, and a life that was truly well-lived. She leaves behind a rich legacy that will forever be cherished by the memories she formed alongside all who knew her.

Mrs. Bessie Grace Brock

Our precious mother, Bessie Grace Sharpe Brock, age 85, of Rome, GA., left us for her heavenly home on Thursday, May 14th, 2026.

Sister Brock was born in Floyd County on January 25th, 1941, a daughter of the late Buchanan Albert Sharpe and the late Della Myrtle Frizzell Sharpe. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Mr. Marshall Freeman Brock; two sisters, Mary Lindsey and Martha Blythe; three brothers, J.B, Bob, and David Sharpe. She attended Rome High School but, unfortunately, didn’t get to graduate; however, at age 60, she obtained her GED and was so proud of her accomplishment. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved her children with all her heart. Her unconditional love was shown through actions and not just words; she always baked her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren a special, homemade birthday cake every year for their birthday- no matter how wild the special cake request was. Her wonderful ability to bake and cook led her to gain the nickname of “Bessie Crocker”, which she was affectionately called by her family. She enjoyed her flowers and working in the yard and enjoying the small, simple things in life that brought her happiness. She retired from the Sara Lee Bakery.

Sister Brocks’ full life began when she was saved as a teenager and became one of the first lady Pentecostal-Holiness pioneers in the Floyd County area. She was a true example of a Godly Christian. Often quoting or singing her favorite hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross”, her life shined as an example of what it meant to have salvation and to re-visit The Cross over and over throughout life, in the good times and in the bad. Her spiritual journey began at the West Rome Mission Church where she, along with other Pentecostal believers began a work for Christ, preaching and teaching the full Gospel. After attending West Rome, she later moved to South Rome Church of God, where she, again, helped build a church and place of refuge for the community. She was an active part of the women’s ministry, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a true prayer warrior for the church. She attended Beech Creek Church of God, Armuchee Church of God, and was a current member of The Lakeview Pentecostal-Holiness Church in Plainville, where she taught the Adult Sunday School Class and was “The Church Mother”. Although she had no college education, Sister Brock was a bible scholar through and through- always studying the Word. You could find her often sitting and reading for hours and hours. She was a spiritual mentor to many and could always encourage you with the scriptures that she had memorized, which were also many.

Sister Brock has now won her race and entered into eternity with Jesus where she longed and worked so hard to be. Quoting one of her favorite scriptures that she would say so many times, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness….” Well done my child!

Survivors include her two daughters, Darlene (Lamar) Godfrey and Carol (Fred) Osborn; five grandchildren, Matthew (Shannon) Godfrey, Andrew Thomas, Alex (Victoria) Thomas, Chad Osborn, Brandon (Hutton) Osborn; ten great grandchildren, Sterling Godfrey, Daelyn Godfrey, Makenley Godfrey, Aiden Thomas, Wyatt Thomas, Baylee Thomas, Caden Lingle, James Patterson, Weller Osborn, and Rylie Osborn; one brother, Lee (Sarah) Sharpe; two sister-in- laws, Janice Cescutti and Elizabeth Brock; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; her best friend, June Reynolds; her Lakeview Church Family.

A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Monday, May 18th, 2026, at 1 PM at Lakeview Pentecostal Church, (149 Legg Lake Rd. Plainville, Ga 30733) with her Pastor, Rev. Matthew Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Cemetery. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers include Matthew Godfrey, Alex Thomas, Andrew Thomas, Ronnie Cescutti, Chad Osborn, and Sammy Bray.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 17th, 2026, from 6 PM until 8 PM at Reynolds Funeral Home.

Sister Brock will lie-in-state from 12 PM until the funeral hour at Lakeview Pentecostal Church.

You may leave the family online condolences at www.reynoldsfhrome.com

Flowers will be accepted or the family requests that donations be made to the Lakeview Pentecostal Church Building Fund.

Linton Louis Mathews

Mr. Linton Louis Mathews, age 89, of Cartersville, Georgia, peacefully passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Mathews was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on March 18, 1937, a son to the late William Frank Mathews and the late Lula Mae Blue Mathews. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Sykes; three brothers, Homer, Bay, and David; one sister, Maxine.

Mr. Mathews was a man who all those around him could take notes from. His demeanor and disposition to life were always something to be admired. Some might say it started when Linton proudly signed to serve his country in the United States Army. Others would say it was just him being Linton. There was no debate to him being kind, trustworthy, honest, hardworking, and reliable though. These attributes had him taking a job driving a truck with J.B. Hunt and his travels would many times find him in positions to help those who were in need. His love knew no boundaries, he would give to anyone in need - but he especially tried to help those battling substance, alcohol, and medical issues. No one saw his loving nature more than his beautiful wife, Mamie, who he was married to for 68 years. When Linton wasn't working, he spent his spare time working on cars. Muscle cars ( like his Dodge Demon) and motorcycles were something he truly enjoyed. If Linton was inside, you could find him sitting watching the news, CSPAN was his favorite channel! It is all these things and more that will be so dearly missed by Linton's family. His family was by far his greatest achievement and what he loved the most.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Mamie Mathews; two sons, Linton Mathews Jr. and Tyrell Mathews; two daughters, Linda Franklin and Mitzi Allen; six grandchildren, Ricky (donna) Sykes, Jaasiel Allen, Brittany (Dustin) Mathews, Tamia Mathews, Tyrell Mathews Jr., John Franklin; three great grandchildren, Keahri Sykes, Jayden Sykes, Johnell Easter; one brother, Charlie; four sisters, Eula, Gussie, Annette, Buddie; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends also survive.

Interment service will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia, 30114, on May 20, 2026, at 11AM.
