Growth does not always happen in the big moments. Sometimes it begins quietly, through faith, perseverance, and the courage to keep moving forward. May this prayer encourage you to trust the process, embrace each season, and continue becoming who God created you to be.

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." — Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV)

Some healing moments happen in the quietest ways. For Virginia Barrett, one of those moments came around a Thanksgiving table.

After a heart attack led to a long hospital stay, Virginia and her daughters, Carla and Louann, found comfort in the compassionate care they received at AdventHealth Redmond. During Thanksgiving, nurses opened their break room so the Barrett family could share a meal together, creating a moment of connection and peace during a difficult season.

As Virginia regained strength, one memory stood out most: sitting outside in the sunshine with her daughters for the first time since her hospitalization. It was a simple moment, but one filled with hope.

Today, Virginia is doing well and remains deeply grateful for the heart care team, ICU caregivers, inpatient rehab team, nurse practitioner Jeff Hughes, and everyone who supported her recovery journey. Most of all, she is thankful for Carla and Louann, who stood faithfully beside her every step of the way.

At AdventHealth Redmond, we’re honored to care for people with clinical expertise, compassion, and the kind of support that helps families feel cared for through every stage of healing.

Peace does not always arrive when life becomes quiet. Sometimes it meets us in the middle of uncertainty, reminding us that God is still near.

Scripture tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” — John 14:27

On May 7, 2025, at just 30 years old, Katie Smith suffered a vertebral artery dissection that led to three strokes. What followed was a long and difficult road filled with uncertainty, recovery, and moments that tested her strength and faith.

Today, Katie sees that day differently. Not as the end of her story, but as a second chance at life.

Over the past year, she has leaned on her faith, the love of her husband Cody, and the joy of their 7-year-old daughter, Kensie, to keep moving forward, one step at a time. While recovery has not been easy, Katie continues to meet each challenge with courage, gratitude, and hope for what’s ahead.

On May 14, Katie threw out the first pitch at the Rome Emperors Strike Out Stroke game, marking one year since the stroke that changed her life with a celebration of resilience, healing, and the moments that matter most.

Now, Katie and her family are looking ahead with thankful hearts as they prepare to welcome a baby boy into their family this August.

From hospital days to the pitcher’s mound, Katie’s story is a reminder that healing is often a journey taken one day at a time, with faith, family and hope leading the way.
