When your child learns a word, they get access to multiple language functions that they can utilize in a variety of contexts and activities.

Some example functional language terms:

By giving children choice questions, we are modeling possible target words for them to copy. "Sammy, do you want the airplane or the truck?" is one example of this. The prospective words —"truck" or "airplane"—are heard by the child. Since they require the child to extract and recall a term from memory, open-ended questions such as "What do you want to play with?" can be more difficult for them. Offering options not only facilitates imitation and repetition, but also enables them to gesture or point.
