🦢 THROWBACK THURSDAY: WART TREATMENT HAS COME A LONG WAY!

If you’ve ever had a plantar wart, you probably know one thing: they can be STUBBORN. 😩

For years, treating plantar warts often meant options like:

πŸ₯Ά Freezing
πŸ§ͺ Acids and chemical treatments
🩹 Cutting or debriding
πŸ“… Repeated treatments over weeks or even months

But wart treatment has evolved.

⚑ Meet Swift.

Swift uses precisely delivered microwave energy to stimulate your body’s own immune response to the HPV infected tissue causing the wart. Instead of simply attacking what you see on the surface, the goal is to help your immune system recognize and fight the infection.

And one of our favorite parts? No freezing. No acids. No cutting.

Plantar warts may be an old problem, but that doesn’t mean we have to treat them the old way. πŸ˜‰

Think you have a plantar wart or have one that just keeps coming back? Give us a call and ask about Swift wart therapy.

πŸ‘Ÿ GO GRAB YOUR KID’S SHOES… AND FLIP THEM OVER!

Seriously. Take a look at the bottoms. πŸ‘€

The way your child’s shoes wear down can give us clues about how their feet are moving when they walk and run.

So what are you looking for?

πŸ‘Ÿ EVEN WEAR
Some wear across the sole is completely normal. Kids are hard on shoes!

πŸ‘Ÿ INSIDE EDGE WEAR
More wear along the inside edge may mean your child’s foot is rolling inward more when they walk.

πŸ‘Ÿ OUTSIDE EDGE WEAR
More wear along the outside edge may mean your child is putting more pressure toward the outside of the foot.

And here’s another one to watch for: Does one shoe look significantly more worn than the other?

That doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. Shoe wear is a clue, not a diagnosis. But when unusual wear is paired with foot or heel pain, frequent tripping, tired legs, or changes in the way your child walks, it may be worth having their feet checked.

Back-to-school season means new shoes for a lot of kids. Before you toss the old pair, flip them over you might learn something. πŸ‘€πŸ‘Ÿ

πŸ‘Ÿ CAN YOUR SHOES GIVE YOU PLANTAR WARTS?

Not exactly but there IS a connection worth knowing.

Plantar warts are caused by certain strains of HPV that enter the skin through tiny cuts, cracks, or weakened areas on the bottom of the foot.

So where do shoes come in?

🦢 Poor fitting shoes can create friction, blisters, and small breaks in the skin potentially making it easier for the virus to enter.

πŸ‘Ÿ Thrifted or secondhand shoes may have been worn by someone with a plantar wart. Because the virus can spread through contaminated surfaces, we recommend being cautious with previously worn footwear especially shoes worn barefoot.

πŸ’¦ Warm, damp shoes also create an environment where viruses and fungi are more likely to hang around.

Buying secondhand shoes?
βœ”οΈ Clean and disinfect them before wearing
βœ”οΈ Let them dry completely
βœ”οΈ Wear clean socks
βœ”οΈ Skip pairs with heavily worn or damaged insoles
βœ”οΈ Don’t share shoes with someone who currently has a plantar wart

And remember: plantar warts aren’t caused by being β€œdirty.” They’re a viral infection and they can be stubborn.

If you have a painful spot on the bottom of your foot that isn’t going away, it may be more than a callus.

πŸ‘Ÿ IS SIZING UP A GOOD IDEA?

Kids’ feet grow FAST. So when your child fits a size 3, it can be tempting to grab the size 4 instead.

β€œThey’ll grow into them anyway!” πŸ˜…

But is that actually better for their feet?

Not always.

Shoes that are too big can allow the foot to slide around, which may lead to:

πŸ‘£ Rubbing and blisters
πŸ‘£ Less stability while running and playing
πŸ‘£ Toes gripping to keep the shoe in place
πŸ‘£ More trips and falls
πŸ‘£ An awkward walking pattern

Kids DO need growing room β€” just not an entire extra shoe size.

πŸ“ A good starting point is about a thumb’s width of space between their longest toe and the end of the shoe. Their heel should also stay secure without slipping while they walk.

And because kids can grow quickly, check their shoe fit regularly. A perfectly fitting pair today might be too small before they actually look worn out!

πŸ’™ The goal isn’t buying the biggest shoe they can wear. It’s buying the shoe that fits their foot properly right now.

πŸ‘Ÿ THE SHOE GUIDE: CHILDREN'S EDITION

We've talked about children's arch types now let's talk about what we're actually putting on those growing feet!

When choosing shoes for kids, remember one important rule:

πŸ’™ FIT BEATS BRAND. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

A good children's shoe should have enough room for growing toes, bend where the foot naturally bends, stay secure around the heel, provide appropriate stability, and most importantly allow your child to walk and play comfortably.

Our guide breaks down some great options for:

πŸ‘Ÿ Everyday wear
πŸƒ Running & active kids
🦢 Wide feet & kids needing more toe room
🩺 Children experiencing foot pain or other concerns

And remember: more arch support isn't automatically better. Growing feet are still developing, and not every child needs corrective shoes or inserts.

If your child is experiencing persistent foot or heel pain, changes in the way they walk, or difficulty keeping up because their feet hurt, that's when it's worth having their feet evaluated.

πŸ’™ Good shoes today. Healthy feet tomorrow.

What Type of Arch Does Your Child Have?

Earlier this week, we talked about adult arch types but what about our kids? πŸ‘Ÿ

Children can have low, neutral, or high arches too, but there's one BIG difference:

πŸ‘‰ Their feet are still growing and developing.

πŸ”Ή LOW / FLAT ARCH
The arch looks very low or may seem to disappear when your child stands.

And parents don't panic! Flat-looking feet can be completely normal in children, especially when they're younger. A low arch by itself doesn't automatically mean there's a problem.

πŸ”Ή NEUTRAL ARCH
You'll see a moderate curve along the inside of the foot while your child is standing.

πŸ”Ή HIGH ARCH
The curve along the inside of the foot is more pronounced. Some children with higher arches may experience increased pressure under the heel or ball of the foot.

So what's more important than simply looking at their arches?

🚨 Watch how your child FEELS and MOVES.

Pay attention if you notice:

πŸ‘£ Foot, heel, or ankle pain
πŸ‘Ÿ Shoes wearing down very unevenly
πŸƒ Avoiding running or playing because their feet hurt
🚢 Frequent tripping or noticeable changes in the way they walk
🦢 Significant inward rolling of the feet or ankles
↔️ One foot looking noticeably different from the other

πŸ’™ THE BIG TAKEAWAY:

Flat feet don't automatically mean something is wrong and they don't automatically mean your child needs special shoes or orthotics.

But pain, difficulty keeping up with other kids, changes in walking, or other persistent symptoms deserve a closer look.

Growing feet change quickly. If something doesn't seem right, we're here to help figure out what's going on.

πŸŽ’πŸ‘Ÿ Back to School Check: Has Your Child Outgrown Their Shoes?

With a new school year just around the corner, backpacks aren't the only thing that need to fit correctly shoes do too!

Children's feet can grow quickly, and shoes that are too small may lead to discomfort, blisters, and even changes in the way they walk.

Here are 5 signs it may be time for a new pair:

πŸ‘£ Complaining of foot, heel, or toe pain
πŸ‘Ÿ Toes are touching the front of the shoe
🧦 Shoes are difficult to put on or take off
πŸ‘£ Uneven wear on the bottoms of the shoes
πŸ“ They've recently had a growth spurt

πŸ’‘ Back to School Tip: Have your child stand while you check the fit. There should be about Β½ inch (roughly a thumb's width) between their longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Did you know? Studies have found that many children are wearing shoes that are too small. A quick fit check before school starts can help keep growing feet healthy and comfortable all year long.

If your child is having ongoing foot pain, frequent tripping, or you're unsure whether their shoes fit properly, we're happy to help evaluate their growing feet.

πŸ’¬ Parents, let's compare notes! How often do you find yourself buying new shoes for your kids every few months, twice a year, or only when they tell you they don't fit anymore? πŸ‘Ÿ

πŸ‘Ÿ Therapy Thursday: Not All Comfortable Shoes Are Right for Your Feet

Have you ever tried on a pair of shoes that felt amazing in the store… only to have your feet hurting by the end of the day?

You're not alone.

Comfort is important, but it's only part of the equation. A shoe should also provide the right support for your feet and the activities you do every day.

Here are a few things to look for when shopping for your next pair:

βœ… Supports your arch type
βœ… A firm heel that doesn't collapse easily
βœ… Bends at the ball of the foot not in the middle
βœ… Enough room for your toes to move naturally
βœ… Still feels comfortable after hours of walking not just the first five minutes

🚩 Red flags:
β€’ Your heel slips while you walk
β€’ Your toes feel cramped or numb
β€’ The shoe twists or folds too easily
β€’ Your feet ache after wearing them

The best shoe isn't always the softest one it's the one that properly supports your feet.

If you've been through several pairs of shoes and you're still dealing with heel pain, arch pain, or foot fatigue, it may be time to have your feet evaluated. Sometimes the problem isn't the shoe it's an underlying foot condition that needs the right treatment.

πŸ‘Ÿ Wear It Wednesday: Are You Wearing the Right Shoes for Your Arch?

Yesterday, we talked about the different arch types. Today, let's take the next step!

Your arch plays an important role in how your feet absorb shock and support your body. Wearing the right type of shoe can help improve comfort and may reduce strain on your feet, ankles, knees, and even your back.

Here's a general guide:

🟦 Low Arch / Flat Feet: Look for stability or motion control shoes to help support your arch and reduce overpronation.

🟦 Neutral Arch: A well cushioned neutral shoe provides balanced support for everyday walking, work, and exercise.

🟩 High Arch: Choose well cushioned shoes that provide excellent shock absorption and comfort.

Remember there is no single "best" shoe for everyone. The best shoe is the one that fits your feet, your lifestyle, and your specific foot needs.

If you're dealing with heel pain, arch pain, bunions, plantar fasciitis, or simply aren't sure what type of shoe is right for you, our doctors are here to help.

🦢 What Does Your Footprint Say About Your Feet?
Did you know your footprint can give clues about your arch type? Your arches play an important role in how your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and even your back absorb pressure with every step.
πŸ’§ Try the Wet Foot Test!
1️⃣ Wet the bottom of one foot.
2️⃣ Step onto a paper bag, piece of cardboard, or dark concrete.
3️⃣ Compare your footprint to the chart.
Are you... πŸ…°οΈ Flat Arch πŸ…±οΈ Normal Arch πŸ…² High Arch
πŸ‘‡ Drop your letter (A, B, or C) in the comments! We'd love to see what everyone gets!
⚠️ Keep in mind: This is a fun screening tool not a medical diagnosis. Some people with flat or high arches have no pain at all, while others may experience heel pain, ankle instability, plantar fasciitis, or fatigue. If you're dealing with ongoing foot pain, an evaluation can help determine the cause and the best treatment options.
At Ankle & Foot Associates of Northern Michigan, we offer comprehensive foot and ankle evaluations and, when appropriate, custom orthotics to help improve comfort and support.
