Designer drug stronger than fentanyl sparks 'alarming' overdose trend. Cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid about ten times more potent than fentanyl, is driving a sharp rise in overdose deaths across the United States, with officials linking it to dozens of fatalities and warning that it is hard to detect and may require higher doses of naloxone to reverse.

Cychlorphine (N‑Propionitrile chlorphine) is a synthetic opioid first identified overseas in 2024.

The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education estimates the drug is roughly ten times more potent than fentanyl.

The Knox County Regional Forensic Center linked cychlorphine to at least 41 overdose deaths in 11 East Tennessee counties between July 2025 and February 2026.

Health officials in Florida, Kentucky, Oklahoma and South Carolina have issued public warnings about the drug’s presence.

Toxicology data confirm cychlorphine in about two dozen U.S. states, including New York, California, Illinois, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.
