Feeling tired is incredibly common, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean we should accept feeling exhausted all the time as a normal part of being busy, getting older, or having a family. Fatigue is a symptom, and one of the things we appreciate about functional medicine is that it encourages us to ask what may be contributing to it rather than looking at energy as an isolated problem.
Our ability to produce and maintain energy is influenced by many different systems in the body. Sleep quality, nutrition, blood sugar regulation, iron and other nutrient levels, thyroid function, hormones, medications, stress, movement, and mitochondrial function can all be pieces of the picture. For one patient, poor sleep may be the biggest contributor. For another, we may discover that nutrition, hormone changes, chronic stress, or several factors together deserve more attention.
This is also why functional medicine looks at systems such as energy, digestion, hormones, and stress together rather than independently. The body doesnโ€™t organize itself into separate specialties. What happens in one system can influence another, and sometimes seemingly unrelated symptoms provide valuable information when we look at the entire picture.
The goal isnโ€™t to assume thereโ€™s an underlying condition every time someone feels tired or to order every test available. Itโ€™s to become curious about persistent symptoms and determine which questions are actually worth asking. If your energy has changed and you donโ€™t feel like yourself anymore, thatโ€™s worth a conversation.

One of the first things patients notice during a functional medicine appointment is how many questions they're asked. Sometimes people even apologize because they feel like they're talking too much, but one of the most valuable tools we have as providers is your story.

In conventional medicine, appointments are often focused on the symptom that's bringing you in that day. Functional medicine certainly cares about your current symptoms, but it also looks at everything that came before them. We may ask about your childhood, previous illnesses, antibiotic use, pregnancies, surgeries, stress levels, sleep, nutrition, exercise habits, family history, and major life events. At first glance those questions can seem unrelated, but together they help us build a timeline of your health.

One of the core principles of functional medicine is that many chronic health concerns don't develop overnight. They often evolve over years as genetics, lifestyle, environment, nutrition, stress, and other factors interact. Understanding that history helps us identify patterns that may otherwise be missed.

That doesn't mean every answer is hidden in your past, nor does it mean every patient requires extensive testing. It simply means that your health story matters. Our goal is to understand the whole picture so we can create recommendations that make sense for you, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
