Michael "Mike" Haddican
Michael "Mike" Haddican, 85, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Mike was born on April 13, 1941, in Enderlin, North Dakota, to Ann and Erwin "Dugan" Haddican. He was raised in Nome, North Dakota, where he attended school from first grade through his senior year. He went on to attend Valley City State College, earning a bachelor's degree in Biology and Physical Education.
A gifted athlete and lifelong sports enthusiast, Mike played four years of basketball under Coach Osmon. One of his proudest college memories was competing in the NAIA National Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He also participated in football and track, beginning a lifelong passion for athletics that would shape the lives of countless young people.
It was at Valley City State that Mike met the love of his life, JoAnn. They were married in Fingal, North Dakota, in 1962 and shared 64 wonderful years together, building a life centered on faith, family, friendship, and service.
After graduating in 1963, Mike and JoAnn made Roseburg, Oregon, their home, where they raised their two children, Todd and Traci. Mike began what would become a remarkable 35-year career at JoLane Middle School as a Physical Education and Health teacher. While he loved teaching, coaching was truly his calling. Over the years he coached football, wrestling, track and field, boys and girls basketball, and girls volleyball. He also taught Driver's Education in Roseburg for 26 years.
For generations of students, Coach Haddican was more than a teacher. He was a mentor, role model, encourager, and friend. He believed in hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, and helping every student reach their potential. His steady guidance, infectious smile, and genuine care left an impact that extended far beyond the classroom and playing fields.
Mike's commitment to his students and community reached well beyond coaching. He led fundraising efforts that made lasting improvements to JoLane Middle School, including raising funds for the all-weather track dedicated in his honor as the Mike Haddican Track in 1980. He also organized fundraisers for new football and basketball scoreboards and weight room equipment, always striving to provide better opportunities for future generations of students. In 1992, he was honored by the Oregon Jr. High School Coaches Association as one of only three Coaches of the Year, a fitting recognition of his dedication and influence.
While Mike was deeply devoted to his career, his greatest joy was his family. He was a loving husband, proud father, and devoted grandfather whose kindness, generosity, and unwavering support touched everyone who knew him. Mike was very proud of his grandchildren and they all brought him endless joy. He gave freely of his time, his wisdom, and his heart. Whether offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, or simply sharing his warm smile, Mike made people feel valued and welcome. His family will forever cherish his gentle spirit, sense of humor, and the unconditional love he gave so generously.
Mike also treasured the outdoors and the many adventures it brought. He loved hunting in Eastern Oregon with his son Todd and daughter-in-law Melinda, fishing along the Oregon Coast with close friends Bob Pearson and Jack VanAmburg, crabbing, camping with family and friends, and cheering from the stands as his grandson played basketball.
After retiring in 1998, Mike and JoAnn embraced retirement with the same joy they brought to every stage of life. Alongside their dear friends, the Pearsons, they spent many winters traveling in their fifth wheels through Arizona and California. They also looked forward each year to spending the month of November in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, making treasured memories with lifelong friends.
Mike was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roseburg.
He is survived by his beloved wife, JoAnn; his son, Todd (Melinda), and granddaughters Kessla and Brynn; his daughter, Traci Martin (Randy), and grandchildren Adriann, Zachary, and Madison; his brother, Pat Haddican; his sister, Mary Wheeler (Jim); the Hallsten family; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ann and Erwin "Dugan" Haddican.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Amedisys Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided during Mike's final weeks in his courageous battle with cancer.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 12:10 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roseburg. A reception will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. in the church hall. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens.

Mike's legacy lives on in the thousands of students he inspired, the athletes he coached, the family he adored, and the countless lives he touched through his generosity, integrity, and unwavering kindness. His smile, his servant's heart, and the example he set will never be forgotten.
