The best way to understand your breast cancer risk? Talk with your primary care provider. 🩺

Before your visit, gather your family health history from both your mother's and father's sides: who had cancer, what type, and at what age.

Your provider can estimate your risk, decide whether genetic counseling or testing makes sense, and help you build a screening plan that fits your life.

Risk you can change: alcohol

Here's one breast cancer risk factor you can control. πŸ₯‚

Even small amounts of alcohol raise breast cancer risk, and the risk goes up the more you drink. Cutting back is one of the simplest changes you can make.

Other everyday changes that help: staying active, keeping a healthy weight (especially after menopause), and not smoking. Small, steady changes add up to a big impact, and they lower the risk of other cancers too. πŸ’—

How to do a breast self-exam, part 2: feel. βœ‹

3️⃣ Lie down with a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Use the pads of the three middle fingers of your left hand.

4️⃣ Use three levels of pressure in small, coin-sized circles: light, medium, then firm.

5️⃣ Follow a pattern. Move up and down in rows from collarbone to belly, armpit to the center of your chest. Don't forget the underarm!

6️⃣ Switch sides.

7️⃣ Repeat in the shower. Wet, slippery skin can make changes easier to feel.

How to do a breast self-exam, part 1: look and check. πŸͺž

1️⃣ Look in the mirror. Shoulders straight, arms at your sides. Look for changes in size, shape or color, or dimpling, puckering, swelling or redness. Then raise your arms overhead and look again. Finally, press your hands on your hips and flex your chest muscles.

2️⃣ Check your ni***es. Look for any fluid from one or both ni***es. It could be watery, milky, yellow or bloody.

Do you know your normal? πŸͺž

A breast self-exam is a simple, free way to learn how your breasts normally look and feel. Many breast cancers are first found by women who noticed something different.

Start in your 20s and keep it up for life. If you still have periods, the best time is 3 to 5 days after your period ends. If not, pick the same day each month, like the 1st, so it becomes a habit.

A self-exam doesn't replace mammograms or clinical exams. It works alongside them. This week we'll walk you through how. πŸ’—
