Why timing matters for habits ⏰

Parents often ask:
“Is it too early to address this habit?”
“Is it too late?”

As a therapist, here’s how I think about it:
🌱 If a habit is shaping the palate → we want to address it
🌱 If a habit is impacting tongue posture → we want to address it
🌱 If a habit is interfering with speech or feeding → we want to address it
🌱 If the child is ready to be supported → we begin
It’s rarely about “growing out of it.”

It’s about replacing the pattern with a healthier one.

✨ With the right support, habit change can be gentle.

💬 Have you ever been told “they’ll grow out of it”?

Here’s something parents rarely hear:
Some oral habits exist BECAUSE breathing is hard.

Examples:
➡️ A child who can’t breathe well through their nose may keep the mouth open
➡️ A pacifier can encourage forward tongue posture
➡️ Thumb sucking can shape the palate, narrowing the airway
➡️ Tongue thrust often co-exists with mouth breathing

So when we address a habit,
we don’t just “remove” it.

We look at:
👃 Can they breathe through their nose?
👅 Where is the tongue resting?
👄 Are the lips sealed?

✨ Function first. Habit change follows.

💬 Have you ever connected your child’s habit to their breathing?

Thumb sucking. Pacifier use. Nail biting. Shirt chewing.
These habits aren’t “bad behavior.”

They’re signals.
A child might use a habit because:
➡️ It calms their nervous system
➡️ It gives them oral input
➡️ It helps them focus
➡️ It supports their breathing (yes, really)

So before we focus on “stopping” the habit…
Let’s figure out what need it’s meeting.

🕵‍♀️ Detective tip:
Notice WHEN the habit shows up.
Tired? Bored? Anxious? Focusing?
That “when” matters.

💬 What habit are you trying to understand?

Tension lives in the jaw + tongue.

Try this anywhere — desk, car, couch:
✨ “Jaw release + nose breath”
➡️ Lips closed, teeth apart
➡️ Tongue lifted to the roof of the mouth
➡️ Slow nasal inhale (4 counts)
➡️ Slow nasal exhale (6 counts)
Repeat 5 times.

This signals safety to the nervous system AND
retrains tongue + jaw posture.

✨ Small. Consistent. Powerful.

💬 Where do you hold tension — jaw, neck, or shoulders?

Adult care also needs a team:

🦷 Dentist / Airway-aware dentist → wear, alignment, sleep
😬 TMJ Specialist → joint function
👃 ENT → nasal + airway evaluation
🛌 Sleep Physician → sleep studies, apnea care
🌬 Myofunctional Therapist → tongue + breathing patterns
👐 PT / Bodywork → posture, neck, fascia

Each provider brings a piece of the puzzle.

✨ Together, real change becomes possible.

💬 Have you ever connected your dentist + ENT visits?

Because chronic symptoms in adults
often come from patterns repeated thousands of times a day:
➡️ clenching
➡️ mouth breathing
➡️ tongue resting low
➡️ shallow breathing

These small habits stack up.

🎯 Change the pattern, change the outcome.

💬 Which of these patterns do you notice in yourself?

Right now, without changing anything…
➡️ Where is your tongue?
➡️ Are your lips closed?
➡️ Are your teeth touching?
➡️ Are your shoulders up by your ears?
➡️ Are you breathing through your nose?

If you noticed:
• tongue resting low
• lips parted
• teeth clenched
• mouth breathing
…that’s your starting point.

Not a problem. Just data.

✨ Awareness is always the first intervention.

💬 What did you notice?

What we look for in adult patients 👀

When I evaluate an adult, here’s what stands out:
👅 Where the tongue rests
🦷 Wear patterns from clenching/grinding
😮 Whether lips seal naturally
👃 Nasal vs. mouth breathing
🧍 Head and neck posture
😴 Sleep history (snoring, fatigue, waking up)

These are clues to oral function — and often, to airway.

Adults are often told:
“It’s just stress.”
“Wear a night guard.”
“Maybe try yoga.”

Those things have a place.
But they don’t address the root.

✨ Myofunctional therapy looks at the system.

💬 Have you ever been told your symptoms were “just stress”?

06/02/2026

Most adults didn’t “decide” to mouth breathe.

It happened slowly:
➡️ allergies that never fully resolved
➡️ a childhood of restricted airway
➡️ stress that changed breathing patterns
➡️ tongue posture that never developed

Now in adulthood, mouth breathing feels normal.

But the cost shows up in:
😴 poor sleep
😬 jaw tension
🧠 brain fog
💢 inflammation

✨ The good news?
Breathing patterns CAN change at any age.

💬 Did you mouth breathe as a kid?

Myofunctional therapy isn’t just for kids.

If you’re an adult dealing with:
➡️ TMJ pain or clicking
➡️ chronic headaches
➡️ neck + shoulder tension
➡️ snoring or interrupted sleep
➡️ teeth grinding
➡️ mouth breathing
…these are clues.

Not just “getting older.”
Not just “stress.”
Your oral function may be part of the picture.

🕵‍♀️ Detective tip:
Notice your tongue right now.
Where is it resting?
That alone tells us a LOT.

💬 Where did your tongue land when you read that?
