THE RUTH JACKSON ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY (RJOS) was founded in 1983 as a support and networking group for the growing number of women orthopaedic surgeons. The women at the first meeting felt that there were many common problems confronting them, which could best be solved by pooling resources. These range from sharing technical solutions for practice problems to how to survive motherhood and orthopae

dic practice/residency at the same time. The RJOS began with 42 women and has grown to a membership of more than 600. The majority is from North America, with international female orthopaedists included. The membership is comprised of practicing orthopaedic surgeons, residents, fellows, and medical students. With these varied perspectives, RJOS offers a woman's viewpoint on the rewards and shortcomings of a career in orthopaedics. For the medical student, resident and fellow there is a mentoring program to offer guidance as well as practical suggestions for choosing and completing an orthopaedic residency. Those members considering a first job, a fellowship or a career change can be linked through the Mentoring Committee with someone experienced in those areas.

Today, RJOS is shining the member spotlight on RJOS Member at Large Dr. Amiethab Aiyer!

Dr. Aiyer shares that RJOS has helped him grow because he better understands the unique perspectives of women in the field, and the challneges and successes they have dealt with. He told RJOS that being involved with the society has been incredible because of the stories and experiences of members he has heard, and has gained inspiration hearing the obstacles they've overcome and the stories of celebrating triumphs.

Please join RJOS in congratulating Dr. Stephanie Wong, RJOS Development Committee Chair, on receiving a 2026 AANA Research Grant.

Dr. Wong’s study will look to better understand the cellular and inflammatory factors involved in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Stephanie Wong, one of our 2026 AANA Research Grant recipients!

Through the AANA Research Grant Program, AANA supports innovative research that advances arthroscopy and improves patient care.

Dr. Wong’s funded project is one of the first studies to use a broad multiomic approach to better understand the cellular and inflammatory factors involved in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). The research aims to identify markers of pre-arthritic synovitis that could ultimately inform treatments before osteoarthritis develops and help reduce patients’ risk of hip osteoarthritis.
