Most people know to wear sunscreen but forget that their eyes are just as vulnerable to UV damage as their skin.

UV radiation from the sun can damage multiple parts of the eye, including the delicate skin around the eyes. This exposure builds up over time, silently increasing the risk of several vision-threatening conditions. And since UV rays can’t be seen or felt, the danger often goes unnoticed until damage has occurred.

Wear sunglasses labeled “100% UVA and UVB protection” or “UV400.” Large or wraparound styles provide added coverage to prevent rays from getting in around the lenses. A backside anti-reflective coating will help protect your eyes from rays bouncing off of the back of your lenses, and a polarized lens will help block the intense UV rays coming in from the front. A wide-brimmed hat can reduce UV exposure to your eyes by up to 50%.

Many eye conditions caused by UV exposure develop without noticeable symptoms - until it’s too late. Prioritizing sun safety isn’t just a seasonal concern, it’s a year-round commitment to your vision.

May is Healthy Vision Month! Heading into summer, it is a good reminder that healthy eyes are much more than reading letters from a chart!

5 Simple Habits for Healthier Eyes

Get Regular Eye Exams – Schedule a comprehensive exam to catch issues early.

Eat for Your Eyes – Include leafy greens, colorful vegetables, fish, and nuts in your diet.

Wear Sunglasses – Choose lenses with 100% UVA/UVB protection to guard against sun damage.

Rest Your Eyes – Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Quit Smoking – Smoking increases the risk of vision loss due to AMD and cataracts.
