Happy National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. Yes, your functional nutritionist is telling you to bake cookies.

Here's why these ones are different.

There's no refined sugar in the recipe. Apple sauce and a small amount of maple syrup do all the sweetening, which means you skip the sharp blood sugar spike and the crash that follows it. That crash is the reason so many women feel wired then wiped out an hour after dessert.

Brown rice and quinoa flour replace wheat entirely, so there's no gluten hitting an already irritated gut lining. Coconut oil provides fat that slows the whole glucose response down even further.

And the blueberries folded in are not decoration. They bring polyphenols, which are actively anti-inflammatory.

Cookies were honestly the hardest thing to let go of when I cleaned up my own diet. Most gluten free versions on the shelf are still loaded with refined sugar and fillers, so you end up bloated for a treat that wasn't even worth it.

These are worth it.

Breastfeeding advice carries more shame than any other topic in women's health. Every possible choice comes with a chorus telling you it was the wrong one. None of that is support. It is noise wearing the costume of advice.

August is National Breastfeeding Month and this year's global theme is Strengthen What Works. Meaning lactation help that insurance actually covers. Pumping breaks protected under the PUMP Act. Someone asking how the mother is doing, not only the baby.

That last one gets skipped constantly. Nobody checks her thyroid, her nutrient levels or the fatigue that never quite lifted.

What I hear most in my office is not regret about the choice she made. It is how alone she felt making it.

However it went for you, mama, tell me in the comments. No wrong answers here.

Share this with a mom who is in the thick of it right now.

A lunch that leaves you counting down to dinner is almost never a willpower problem. It is a protein and fiber problem. This one lands at 32 grams of protein and 9 of fiber with the pulled chicken, 21 and 12 with the togarashi lentils. That is the difference between finishing your afternoon and standing in the pantry at three.

Maple sesame roasted cauliflower, shirataki noodles, cabbage and cilantro. The cauliflower is the real reason I keep going back though. Sweet, savory and just enough heat to make you pay attention.

Most granola is a blood sugar problem wearing a health costume. This one is not. Sesame, chia and h**p do the protein and fiber work, so it holds you through the morning instead of dropping you at ten.

Three berries instead of one is not a styling choice either. Your microbiome responds to variety, not to any single hero ingredient.
But honestly, the part I look forward to is pouring the Pink Silk Mylk over it and watching the whole bowl turn.

If you're exhausted no matter how much you sleep, and your digestion has been off for months, those two things are almost certainly connected.

Chronic stress triggers cortisol. Sustained cortisol disrupts the balance of your gut microbiome and increases gut permeability, which is what we mean by leaky gut. Undigested particles slip into the bloodstream and inflammation follows.

Now here's the part most people miss. It works in reverse too.
An imbalanced gut can't properly absorb magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C. Those are exactly the nutrients your adrenals depend on to produce stress hormones. Your gut also produces the majority of your serotonin, so when it's inflamed your mood and anxiety levels take a hit as well.

The result is a loop. Depleted adrenals put stress on the body, that stress damages the gut, the damaged gut starves the adrenals of what they need to recover.

Breaking that cycle means addressing both at once. Working on one while ignoring the other is why so many women stay stuck for years.

The full blog post walks through the four stages of adrenal dysfunction and 14 practical steps to start rebalancing: https://connorwellnessclinic.com/blog/stress-gut-and-fatigue-the-intricate-web-of-adrenal-and-digestive-wellness/

Fermenting is the oldest form of preservation we have, and it happens to be one of the best things you can do for your gut.
National Preserving Awareness Week starts today, and this is my favorite way to honor it.
Here is what is actually happening in that jar.
The cabbage sits in a salt brine that clears out anything harmful.
Then Lactobacillus bacteria convert the natural sugars into lactic acid, which preserves the cabbage and gives kimchi that tangy bite.
The result is a genuinely living food.
One of the bacterial species found in kimchi is even named after it, Lactobacillus kimchii.
I like this recipe because it does not ask much of you.
Salt the cabbage, blend apple with onion, ginger and garlic, mix in the chili and scallions, then pack it into jars.
The jar does the rest.
Let it sit at room temperature for 24 to 36 hours and taste every day until it tastes right to you.
Then move it to the fridge.
Your kitchen temperature changes the timeline, so trust your taste over the clock.
Practice matters more than precision here.
Your first batch teaches you what you want from your second.

Half the reason I eat this way is that it does not feel like discipline.
The colors are doing real work here, by the way.

Different pigments mean different polyphenols, and your gut bacteria feed on that variety more than any single superfood.
But mostly I just like that it looks like this.

Anyone else eat with their eyes first, or is that just me.
