Tomorrow night we’ll be delving into fall foraging and making ideas. Every fall I choose a new flight of things to share - this time I’m talking about making jams, day lily fibers, hawthorn, crabapples, Samhain and grains.

Hoary nettle (Urtica gracilis ssp. holosericea) is absolutely loaded with nettle seeds, so why isn’t everyone talking about this! Gone are the days of harvesting tiny clusters of seeds from regular stinging nettle and stinging the heck out of my fingers.

I came upon the species on a walk in my town last year, and returned today to harvest seeds. Apparently it mostly grows east of the Cascades in Washington, but also grows in places like California. It tolerates a dryer climate, which is probably why it has a light fuzz on it. It is a subspecies of stinging nettle, and is a native plant!

In case you’re wondering why I am so excited about this, nettle seeds are a really cool medicinal. I use them as a stimulating tea. They also have a lot of essential fatty acid and stimulate kidney function, fertility and hair growth. The seed medicine is really different than the leaf. I talk about it in my book, Medicinal Plants of the Pacific Northwest.

I did not harvest from this patch, as it is growing on a slag heap from coal mining (nettle is a heavy metal accumulator), but I did harvest some seeds to grow my own next year in the garden. I’ll let you know how it goes! Maybe we all need to grow it.

Last spring I got super curious about what it would take to grown my own grains, so I did it! Barley is the first ripe grain from my test patch of 6 varieties. I got 70g of grain from a 1.5’ x1.5’ plot. I learned a ton, and it actually feels weirdly comforting to have this skill in an uncertain world. It’s actually not that hard!

For me this was a novel and exciting experience, but of course for our ancestors this would be a common experience. I feel like I got a window into their lives and worries during this whole process, and I can’t wait to try for more volume next year!

I lived and breathed crafting as a young person, and then I discovered plants and the two collided to form a lifelong hyper fixation. It’s simultaneously an addiction and a reason for being. Can’t stop, won’t stop.

Linden trees are native to both Europe and North America. The flowers smell deeply floral, and give me a hypnotic feeling.

They calm the nervous system, moisten and cool the GI tract, and ease fevers. But they also just taste great as a tea or syrup.

Linden has long been revered in Europe as a symbol of the divine feminine. More recently as a symbol of the Virgin Mary.

I am obsessed with this tree and I hope you get to meet it and experience its intoxicating scent. It’s often planted as a street tree in cities, so keep your eyes peeled.

I discovered five of these old nests woven into the cattails today while harvesting cattail for a hat project - I think they belonged to red winged black birds. There were also so many tadpoles.

Plants + water = life.

I stepped lightly and quietly in this hidden world.
