We cannot fix the maternal health crisis without asking a bigger question:

Are we changing the way women are cared for, or simply trying to manage the outcomes of a system that isn't working?

The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among high-income countries, and according to the CDC, about 84% of maternal deaths in the United States are preventable.

Then you have the evidence around midwifery-led care that is hard to ignore.

A 2020 systematic review in The Lancet Global Health found that midwife-led care has the potential to prevent 67% of maternal deaths, 64% of newborn deaths, and 65% of stillbirths globally. The same research found that integrating midwives into health systems could provide a 16-fold return on investment.

No one is saying that hospitals don't matter. They absolutely do. Emergencies happen, and skilled medical care saves lives.

But we need to recognize that better outcomes require more than emergency intervention. They require better care before we ever reach the emergency.

Relationship. Continuity. Time. Trust. Informed decision-making. Individualized care. Listening to women. Supporting physiologic birth when it is safe to do so.

Midwives have been doing this for generations.

Maybe it's time we stopped treating midwifery as an alternative and started recognizing it as an essential part of the solution.

Better birth outcomes aren't contingent on a location. There isn't one single thing that creates a better birth outcome. It's the sum of so many things coming together.

And when we get those things right, we give women a better chance at the kind of birth outcomes we should be striving for in the first place.

Mary Romero here at Three Suns is officially a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician! 🎉

Thank you Mary for taking the time to travel to Santa Fe and become certified!

Car seat installation varies by manufacturer, vehicle, child’s age and size, etc. Even small details like the recline angle, lower-anchor limits, harness height, chest-clip placement, or when to transition seats can affect how well the seat protects a child.

Car seat instructions aren’t always intuitive, and sometimes what seems secure isn’t quite right.

Mary recently completed specialized training in Santa Fe to help families understand their specific seat, install it correctly in their specific vehicle, and feel confident using it every day. If you’d like Mary to check your setup or help you learn a new seat, send us a message!

The families in care at Three Suns have the option to have a car seat inspection at their 36 week prenatal visit as well as before they leave with baby after the birth.
