Ever feel like youâre stuck in a never-ending battle with your little one during a regression or transition? As a Child Life Specialist, Iâve learned that the secret to avoiding power struggles isnât in âwinningââ itâs in connection, choice, and understanding development.
Hereâs my go-to approach for turning the tide and keeping the peace:
1. Give the Power Back: Kids love control (who doesnât?), so instead of telling them what to do, offer choices: âDo you want to brush your teeth before or after putting on your pajamas?â
2. Validate, Donât Challenge: Kids feel BIG feelings, and thatâs okay. Instead of shutting them down, try saying, âI can see youâre frustrated. Letâs work through this together.â Validation goes so much further than confrontation.
3. Be the Calm in the Storm: If you stay steady, theyâll likely follow. Calm your own energy first, and watch as your child starts to mirror your peaceful vibe. Youâre the anchor.
4. Distraction is Your Friend: Sometimes, all it takes is a good distraction to break the cycle. Redirect their attention to something newâa game, a song, a fun activity-and youâll see the struggle melt away.
5. Teamwork, Not Combat: For older kids, let them be part of the solution. Instead of demanding they clean their room, ask, âWhat do you think is the best way to get this done?â They feel respected, and you both get the job done without the drama.
ďż˝Remember, youâre not a drill sergeant, youâre a guide. Power struggles happen, but you can break the pattern with connection and compassion.ďż˝ ďż˝
