The key verbal operants:
• Mand — requesting something the child wants (“I want juice”, reaching for a toy). This is typically taught first because the motivation is built in
• Tact — labeling things in the environment (“That is a dog”). This builds vocabulary and world knowledge
• Echoic — repeating what someone says. A foundational skill for building language from imitation
• Intraverbal — responding to what someone says without the item present (“What do you do with a spoon?”). This drives conversation and social skills
• Listener Responding — following instructions and understanding language from others Why does this matter? Because a child can know 200 words and still struggle to communicate what they need. Verbal behavior therapy targets all the functions of communication — not just labeling.

Teaching a child to talk is not enough. Teaching a child to communicate — to request, to comment, to respond, to connect — that is the goal. At Zems, verbal behavior principles are integrated into every ABA program for children with communication delays.
