Today we're celebrating all the dads who make life a little better for both their families and their four-legged family members.

Whether it's early morning walks, feeding time, trips to the ranch, tossing tennis balls, cleaning stalls, teaching responsibility, or simply providing a warm lap after a long day, dads play a special role in the lives of our pets.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ PARVO IS STILL A REAL THREAT IN OUR AREA ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿšจ

Over the past several weeks, we have seen multiple cases of Parvovirus in dogs from communities throughout our area.

Many people think Parvo only affects puppies, but unvaccinated and under-vaccinated adult dogs can become infected as well.

Parvo is highly contagious and can spread in ways many pet owners don't realize:

๐Ÿ”น An infected dog sheds the virus in its stool
๐Ÿ”น The virus contaminates soil, grass, kennels, sidewalks, food bowls, and other surfaces
๐Ÿ”น People can unknowingly carry the virus on their shoes, clothing, hands, or equipment
๐Ÿ”น The virus can then be tracked into yards, homes, parks, or areas where healthy dogs are present

Parvo can survive in the environment for months, making prevention extremely important.

The best protection against Parvo is vaccination.

โœ” Puppies should receive their recommended vaccine series
โœ” Adult dogs should stay current on vaccinations
โœ” Avoid exposing unvaccinated puppies to unknown dogs or public areas

Signs of Parvo may include:
โ€ข Severe vomiting
โ€ข Diarrhea (often bloody)
โ€ข Loss of appetite
โ€ข Lethargy
โ€ข Dehydration

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.

โค๏ธ At Rotan Veterinary Hospital, we are committed to helping protect pets throughout our communities. We are happy to work with pet owners in different ways to make sure your pets get their parvo vaccinations.

๐Ÿดโ˜€๏ธ Summer Horse Safety Tip

As temperatures continue to rise across West Texas, it's important to know the signs of heat stress and how to safely cool down an overheated horse.

If your horse becomes overheated:

โœ… Move them to a shaded area
โœ… Remove tack and allow them to rest
โœ… Offer plenty of fresh water
โœ… Cool them with cold water as needed
โœ… Monitor their temperature closely

Contrary to popular myths, current veterinary research shows there is no scientific evidence that allowing an overheated horse to drink cold water or applying cold water will cause colic or cramping.

Your horse's health and safety are always our priority. If you're concerned about heat stress or your horse isn't recovering normally, contact your veterinarian right away.

Summer Is Here! โ˜€๏ธ

As temperatures rise across West Texas, remember that pets can overheat quickly. Always provide plenty of fresh water, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and never leave pets in a parked vehicle. A little prevention can go a long way in keeping your pet safe this summer.
