My heart feels tender and uplifted by the very special Herd Meditation on Sunday, May 24.
Memorial Day is a time of remembrance and gratitude for those who have given their lives for our freedoms. It is also a joyful celebration of friendship, food, and a welcome to the coming Summer.
Last Sunday, it was also a profound experience of grief, open heartedness, and healing.
Together with 8 women, we held space for our 3 horses, still processing the sudden death of their herd mate, Magic, just a few days before.
Grace, Girl Scout, and Dutch were all standing in the run in - heads lowered, eyes half shut, and completely present in their bodies.
When I shared the story of Magic's unexpected death, there was an instantaneous exhale and quiet gasps by every person. There were more sighs, and tears, hearts opening, and words came forward: Reverence, Empathy, Peaceful, Letting go.
We held a long and full silence there, breathing together with the horses, no thinking, no talking, simply being with what was true.
I felt that we were all suspended in that moment of awe and grace, when time stopped and our hearts rose and extended to touch the horses and each other.
Gently, I broke the silence and invited us to move back to the trees and continue with the meditation.
When we had finally settled into our chairs, Grace, Girl Scout, and Dutch moved slowly one by one, out from under the run in and into the pasture where they grazed for the rest of the session.
I am so grateful for the presence, vulnerability, and care of all who showed up that day - people and horses. We held space for our herd to be just as they are, without needing to perform or be any other way than in their process of grief. And as we did that, we also held space for each other.
