We can’t believe it’s true, but August - the last full month of summer – is here. Don’t forget to keep heat and sun safety a priority when you’re out and about! Check out our tips for staying safe in the sun and in the event of extreme heat:

• Find shady areas for a break from the sun when possible; Avoid work or exercise outside during peak heat hours of the day.
• Drink plenty of water regularly and proactively, especially when doing strenuous activities or sweating. Electrolytes help replenish lost fluids, too. Avoid caffeinated, sugary, and alcoholic beverages, as each of those can contribute to dehydration.
• Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply as recommended. Prolonged exposure to then sun can result in sunburn – and can contribute to skin cancer.
• Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
• Understand the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Be sure to act sooner versus later.

Beat the heat and work toward your best self with PAM Health’s specialized pulmonary rehab and other programs. Reach out today to learn more!

August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month. For clinicians managing GLP-1 therapy, delayed gastric emptying is a mechanism of the drug class and a recognized contributor to upper GI symptoms (Camilleri et al., 2022). When nausea and early satiety cut protein intake, lean mass follows, and older patients are the most exposed (Prokopidis et al., 2026). PAM Health Outpatient Therapy partners with prescribers through the Muscle Matters program: strength assessment, progressive resistance training, and coordination with dietary support so weight loss does not become muscle loss. We would welcome your referrals. !

Muscle loss is not a footnote of aging. Sarcopenia predicts falls, hospitalization, loss of independence, and death, and it is treatable (Cruz-Jentoft et al., 2019). The single best countermeasure is progressive strength training. That is what the Muscle Matters program delivers.

August is National Golf Month. Golf is real exercise, with research linking play to better cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health and even longevity (Murray et al., 2017). But the swing asks a lot: rotation, balance, hip mobility, and power. If pain or stiffness is costing you distance, or costing you rounds, a PAM Health outpatient therapist can rebuild the movement behind the swing. Play more Augusts. !

August is National Wellness Month. The federal Physical Activity Guidelines call for 150 minutes of movement a week plus two days of strength work, and the payoff is lower risk of heart disease, better mood, and independence that lasts (Piercy et al., 2018). Not sure where to start? A PAM Health outpatient therapist can build a plan around your body, your history, and your goals. This month we will show you how.
