Mr. Matthew (Matt) W. Kantala III, 73, passed away peacefully on October 13th, 2026 at Brown Health and Rehab in Royston, GA. A lifelong resident of Elberton, Georgia and born to the late Matthew Kantala Jr. and Sara Tatum Kantala. Matt was a 3rd generation quarryman, a member of the Elberton First Methodist Church, and a member of Philomathea Masonic Lodge #25.

Matt had a larger-than-life personality. He was an avid golfer, outdoorsmen, and adventurer. Matt was the kind of friend who was always there when you needed him. Generous by nature, if he had something and you needed it, he would give it without a second thought. Those fortunate enough to call him a friend knew they could always count on him, and his loyalty, kindness, and willingness to help others will be deeply missed.

Most of all, Matt was a devoted family man. He loved his wife, Ethel, deeply and took great pride in being a husband, father, and grandfather. He was an involved father who spent countless hours coaching his children’s Little League teams and supporting them throughout their lives. When his grandson faced cancer, he was a constant source of love, strength, and support for his daughter, Mori, and their family.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Carol Kantala Burns; son, Matthew Walter Kantala IV.; his grandson, Grant William Terrell; and Mother-in-Law, Marylea Adams Bell.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William "Bill" Max Strickland, age 83, of Cornelia, Georgia. Bill passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

Bill was born on November 9, 1942, in Royston, Georgia, to the late Martin and Polly Strickland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David Strickland (Jenny) and Hubert Strickland.

Bill was a proud University of Georgia graduate, where he majored in Math. He often told the story of meeting his wife, Mary Beth, at the Baptist Student Union. Bill and Mary Beth married on July 10, 1965, and were married for 61 years.

Upon graduating from The University of Georgia, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy from 1966-1969. He attended the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia. He was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, and served aboard the U.S.S. Ozark.

After the Navy, Bill and Mary Beth moved to Atlanta where they started their family. While in Atlanta, Bill worked at The Southern Company, and attended night school at Woodrow Wilson School of Law, and passed the bar exam.

In 1977, Bill and Mary Beth moved to Cornelia, GA where he worked at Standard Telephone and taught night business classes at Piedmont College. Bill and Mary Beth became members of the First Baptist Church of Cornelia where he taught Sunday School classes for several years. He was a Shriner with the Yaarab Temple. Mrs. Ramona Coile, 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed on October 9, 2026.

Mrs. Coile was born in Danielsville, Georgia, on October 8, 1933, daughter of the late Fred W. McElreath and Jessie Lora Adams.

Ramona was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and retired as a food service employee at Danielsville Elementary School. She enjoyed greeting students with a bright smile and sometimes an extra treat! Before retirement, Ramona enjoyed baking cakes and pies for friends, family, and her community. She also enjoyed growing beautiful flowers and roses and often shared these with friends and neighbors.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert S. Coile; son, Freddie Coile; brother, Hoyle McElreath, sisters, Sue Bennett and Lou Roling.

Survivors include her sons, Garold Coile (Alice) and Robin Coile (Latana); daughter-in-law, Janet Coile; brothers, Joe McElreath and Marvin McElreath; grandchildren, Tara Wood (Trey), Josiah Coile (Denita), Eden Coile, Benjamin Coile, Bethany Coile, Lori Anderson (Allen); great-grandchildren, Daniel Wood, Orrin Coile, and Ethan Taylor.

Funeral service for Mrs. Coile will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026. Internment will follow at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Pauline Baugh Royston, 85, Loganville, GA passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026, at her home.

Mrs. Royston was born in Danielsville, GA on September 25, 1941, daughter of the late Heddler and Cordie Graham Baugh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Lee Royston; brother, Albert Baugh; and sister, Minnie Bell Crawford.

Survivors include her son, Larry Royston of Loganville, GA; grandsons, David and Spencer; and great-grandchildren, Harper and Madelynn.

Funeral services for Mrs. Royston will be held in the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Interment will follow in the Franklin Memorial Gardens- South.

The family will receive friends at Pruitt Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until funeral hour on Saturday afternoon. During other times, the family will be at their respective homes.

Mr. Dorris J. House, 87, of Danielsville, GA passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the Brookside Assisted Living in Commerce, GA.

Mr. House was born in Danielsville, GA on July 16, 1939, son of the late Curtis House and Maude Coile House. He was a farmer and attended Bethel M. Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Junior House and Ralph House; and sisters, Geneva “Ginnie” House and Montine Hammond.

Survivors include his nieces, nephews and many extended family members.

The family would like to thank his caregivers, along with the staff of Brookeside Assisted Living and Bristol Hospice, for their love and special care extended to Dorris during the last few weeks of his life.

A graveside service for Mr. House will be held in the Bethel M. Baptist Church Cemetery at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2026, with Rev. Kenneth Segars officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church cemetery from 3:30 p.m. until funeral hour on Thursday afternoon. During other times, the family will be at their respective homes.

Dianne B Healan, age 79 of Watkinsville, passed away on September 26. 2026. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dennis Healan. She is also survived by her son, Darrell Healan (Jennifer) and grandchildren, Darcy Healan, Murphy Healan (Ada) and Brody Healan. She was preceded in death by her son, Danny Healan, and parents, Annie Bell Bragg and M J Bragg.

Dianne was a graduate of Madison County High School. She and Dennis were residents of Watkinsville for over fifty years after their marriage. During her working years, she was employed by Oconee State Bank, the Oconee Enterprise and retired as the Business Manager for the Oconee Health Department where she enjoyed working with her fellow employees and meeting many county residents. She enjoyed spending time attending her grandchildren's sports and other activities as they grew up. She and Dennis enjoyed camping after their retirement. She was a charter member of Briarwood Baptist Church in Watkinsville which she attended for many years.

A special thank you to Agape Hospice Services for taking great care of Dianne during her final days.

Mr. Danny Max Mitchell, 68, of Royston, GA passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Brown Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Max was born on September 3, 1958, in Michigan. He was a self-employed carpenter and attended the Goldmine Church of God. Max, known by many as “Mad Max,” earned the nickname after the cartoon character—a name that seemed to fit his personality. He had a rough exterior and could be a little hard to read at first, but those who took the time to truly know him quickly learned there was much more to him than what you saw on the surface.

Max’s life changed when he met his wife, Reba Bennett Garrett Mitchell. She brought happiness into his life that softened some of those rough edges. Their life together became an important part of the man Max came to be. Also left to cherish his memory are his stepchildren, Mike Boyer of Royston and Tina Patton of Lavonia; as well as his friends and church family.

A memorial service for Max will be held at a later date.

Ann Turner Wood passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026, after a period of declining health. She was born and raised in Royston, Georgia the daughter of Lucius and Elizabeth (Betty) Turner. A proud Georgian she graduated from the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band. During her time at the UGA, she was introduced to the love of her life, a Navy Sailor named A. Terry Wood. They married in June of 1959. After Terry graduated from the UNC Chapel Hill School of Law, they made their home in Hickory where they raised their four sons. In 1987, a job opportunity brought Ann and Terry to Greensboro where he served as City Attorney for many years.

Ann was passionate about many things in life, but her Georgia Bulldogs ranked at the top. She could often be seen wearing her Georgia Dawgs sweatshirts everywhere she went. She loved watching the football team play, and win! She also loved snow skiing and for 50 years was on the Ski Patrol at both Hawksnest and Beech Mountain, where she made many wonderful lifelong friends. While in Greensboro she worked for the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments (PT-COG) with coworkers she loved. Her favorite part of her job was traveling throughout the region visiting EMS and fire departments, teaching firefighters, EMTs and paramedics CPR and giving them their certification tests. They all adored Ann and she thought the world of them as well....

Rev. Barbara Jean Hill Vaughn, 77, of Hartwell, GA passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC.

Rev. Vaughn was born in Royston, GA on December 10, 1948, daughter of the late Richard Arnold Hill and the late Ida Mae Hunter Hill. She was a minister having served as the pastor of Old Path Holiness Church in Toccoa.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Aladean Vaughn; brother, Richard Hill; and sisters, Carolyn Harris and Nancy Busby.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Kellie Royston of Hartwell, GA, Tony and Heather Royston of Cleveland, GA and Matthew Vaugh of Hartwell, GA; brothers, Dean Hill, Terry Hill and Jerry Hill all of Canon, GA; and sisters, Jane Bond of Royston, GA, Judy Hill of Royston, GA and Tammy Chappelear of Lavonia, GA; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Rev. Vaughn will be held in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, with Minister Tony Royston officiating. During other times, the family will be at their respective homes.

Flowers are optional; memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sarah Mildred Atkinson Starr, 95, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend,
passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Born in Franklin County, Georgia on July 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Ervin Nathaniel Atkinson and Sarah Allene Roach Atkinson. A life long resident of Franklin County, she was known for her kind and giving heart, her service to others, and her devotion to her family and friends. She was a masterful cook and baker and showered the sick and bereaved with her famous cakes, pies, and other delights. Her love of sewing, crafting, quilting, and other fine handiworks resulted in hundreds of handmade items, and her gardening skills not only produced beautiful flowers and plants, but also all manner of seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Mildred was a dedicated member of Riverside Baptist Church, and was the oldest living member at the time of her passing. She served faithfully during her active years as church clerk, pianist, Sunday School teacher, VBS director and teacher, women’s ministries leader, as well as in many, many other capacities. After retiring from the Johnson & Johnson Company, she was a faithful and supportive volunteer at the local hospital and in many ministerial and outreach groups serving in our area.
