October Orchard

Autumn in every cup.
There comes a point in October when you can feel the season change.
The mornings turn crisp. The leaves begin collecting along the fence line. Apples come in from the orchard, and suddenly a hot cup of tea sounds a whole lot better than it did a month ago.

Blackthorn Common Sense

More isn't always better.

Herbs may be natural, but that doesn't mean they should be used without thought.
One of the simplest lessons passed down through generations of home herbalism was also one of the most sensible:
Know what you're using. Know why you're using it. And don't use more simply because you think more must work better.
Different herbs call for different preparations. Different preparations have different directions. And sometimes the sensible choice is recognizing when an herbal remedy isn't the right choice at all.

The Stillroom

Long before there was a medicine cabinet in every home, there was often a place where the household kept what it had gathered, dried and prepared.
The stillroom was part pantry, part workroom and part household apothecary. Herbs could be hung to dry. Roots and flowers were stored for later use. Teas, syrups, tinctures, infused oils and salves were prepared according to what the family knew and what the land provided.
It wasn't about making everything yourself simply for the sake of doing it the old way.
It was about knowledge, preparation and self-reliance.
Our kitchens look different now. Our understanding has grown. And some old practices have rightly been left in the past.
But there is still something worth preserving in knowing what you're using, how it was prepared, and why.

Why the preparation matters.
An herb is only part of the story. How it is prepared matters, too.
Tea uses hot water to draw out certain parts of the plant and is often suited to something you want to sip slowly.
A tincture uses alcohol to extract and preserve plant constituents in a concentrated form.
A glycerite uses vegetable glycerin instead, giving us an alcohol-free preparation when that form makes more sense.
And sometimes the best place for an herb is not in a cup or bottle at all. Salves, balms and ointments are made for topical use.
That is why you’ll see the same old-fashioned methods in the Blackthorn stillroom that herbalists have relied upon for generations—but you won’t see us trying to put every herb into the same kind of bottle.
The plant matters. The preparation matters. And knowing the difference matters.

Babies do not need a twelve-step skincare routine.

Most mothers do not have time for one either.

The Blackthorn Mother & Child topical trio includes three straightforward 8 oz preparations:
