Summer is here, and we are ready to slather on the SPF and hit the pool! Swimming is one of our favorite ways to work on coordination, confidence, and core strength.

Puddle jumpers may seem like a fun and easy way to keep kids afloat, but they can actually create dangerous habits in the water. These devices often place children in a vertical “drowning position” (upright with arms out and head above water), which is the opposite of the horizontal body position needed for safe, independent swimming.

Because of this, kids can develop a false sense of security and may struggle if the device is removed.

Instead, we recommend:
• Starting swim lessons early to build real water safety skills
• Using pool noodles or kick boards for supported practice WITH an adult within arm’s reach
• Providing constant, active supervision around any water

If your child will be in open water like the ocean, lake, or river, a well-fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vest is the safest choice.

Water safety is about skill, not just flotation. Let’s set kids up for confidence and safety in and around the water.

Strong core, strong confidence!

Our therapists are sharing simple, play-based exercises to build core and hip strength. These are perfect for kiddos who tend to W-sit or are working toward potty training readiness. These activities help support better posture, stability, and body awareness for everyday skills.

Try a few at home and make it fun!

We are hard at work targeting strength, heavy work, and coordination skills with this lycra sheet activity. Lycra is an elastic material that provides calming deep pressure and proprioceptive input to regulate the nervous system and improve motor planning skills. It is a fan fav among our OTs and their clients!
