The journey was a long one, but the experience gained in every working environment has been amazing. I learned both what to do and what NOT to do. Flourishing Lives Counseling is a long time goal of mine. I have been in the social work and counseling fields since 1996. The development of Flourishing Lives will create an opportunity for four counselors to provide the services they are passionate ab

out while meeting the needs of a small community. We look forward to providing individual, child and adolescent, family, and group therapies. We truly want to see you thrive! McGinnis, MA/Ed.S, LPCS, NCC

How will you make time for a radical act of self love? In the stillness we often find answers, peacefulness, and a relaxation through the entire body. Other times silence can feel anxious, loud, and uncertain. Even in uncertainty we can learn to appreciate those moments and grow from them. Throughout the next week we will continue to offer educational information on silence in the modern day. Stay tuned!

Regulation is a skill that helps individuals manage thoughts, feelings, and actions. By managing emotions and stress individuals can stop quick reactions, lower anxiety, and improve inner strength. This occurs by stopping to think before we speak and act, calming ones nervous system, and teaches us resilience and how to bounce back when life is hard. It doesn’t mean we ignore emotions. It simply means to balance strong emotions and stay as reasonable as one can. Having radical acceptance helps one acknowledge the present moment without judgment or resistance.

Improving regulation can help one reach goals by improving our focus, delaying short term rewards to improve the ability to gain larger wins, and can help create healthy habits such as improving sleep, nutrition, and exercise.

Improving regulation can also help individuals with their relationships. It strengthens patience, deepens empathy, and stops over-reliance on others. With patience angry outbursts can decrease. Deepening empathy helps one hear others with greater understanding and an open mind. Reducing over-reliance helps individuals to reduce the need for others to “fix” their bad moods or troubles in life.

There are clear indicators of supportive and non-supportive factors for regulation, as exhibited in the chart below. What helps you maintain emotional regulation? What interferes with your emotional regulation?

At Flourishing Lives Counseling we are here to help you as you navigate these challenges. Please each out to us at 828-289-7612 if you need assistance!

Sometimes we may be the only contact another person may have, whether it is a casual contact while out in public, through work, friendship, and even family. Finding safety in contact with another is a powerful force. What can we all do to be safe for others?

Good Morning!

I wanted to pass along information concerning two group therapies, a male and a female group, that we are offering at Flourishing Lives Counseling that started in September 2025. We are working with a grant from JCPC, in conjunction with Repay, Inc, to offer social and emotional development groups to middle school and high school aged children who have, or have not, been adjudicated within the DJJ system. These groups will address high risk topics such as truancy, bullying, communication skills, life skills, sexual and physical abuse, DV, school performance, STD’s, running away behaviors and other high risk behaviors we see, etc. Groups are open for 24 weeks, meaning youth can join in at any time and continue the program as needed. As needed we can have more than one group based upon the nature of the participants! There is no cost to the families for these groups.

Our staff will provide snacks after school as each group will be conducted after school hours. We hope these groups will be a benefit to those whom the court system serves, and will fill a gap in service provision in our county. We also hope the groups will serve as social and emotional development for youth who are not involved in the court system as well.

Please call us at 828-289-7612 for more information, reach out by email, and we can assist with the admittance/intake process!

Life can be hard. Some mornings can feel like dread at the start of a new month, week, or day. Smiling upon waking is a powerful and intentional habit that can trigger the release of dopamine and serotonin, instantly improving one’s mood, reducing stress, and fostering a positive, focused, and grateful mindset for the day ahead. It acts as a form of mindful appreciation for the new day. It is often considered a powerful, self-cultivated habit to enhance mental well-being. When is the last time you smiled upon waking?

This is a practice of being fully present and aware of your current experience without overreacting or getting lost in thoughts. Mindful observation allows us to quiet the mind, reduce anxiety, and find peace amidst the chaos of modern world/difficulties. By separating the physical sensations from the emotional and mental stories we construct, we can observe pain with nonjudgmental awareness, and we can reduce emotional reactivity. Rather than feeling trapped or overwhelmed, mindfulness promotes a compassionate and accepting attitude toward one's own discomfort.
