Ryan doesn’t just work as a nurse, she lives the calling. Her compassion, strength, and unwavering commitment to caring for others make a lasting difference in the lives of everyone she touches.

We are so grateful to Southern Vermont AHEC for recognizing her, and for honoring the many extraordinary nurses who show up every day with heart, dedication, and a deep commitment to our community.

What is a nurse?

The dictionary defines a nurse as “a person who cares for the sick or infirm.” But anyone who has truly experienced nursing knows it’s so much more.

Nurses are strength in the face of uncertainty.
They are empathy when it’s needed most.
They are knowledge, resilience, and unwavering dedication—often all at once.

This (May 6–12), we’re proud to share our Nursing Stories—a series of short but powerful glimpses into the lives and hearts of those who answer the call to care.

Chapter One: Ryan Handfield, Clinical Educator with Community Health Rutland.

For Ryan, nursing goes beyond treatment—it’s about building lasting relationships with patients and their families.

Take a moment to read her story below, and join us in celebrating Ryan—and every nurse who shows up, day after day, to make a difference.

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 💜
Our commitment to community doesn’t end when the workday does. After hours, our staff continues to show up for causes that align with the Community Health mission.

On April 29, members of our team attended the Reason to Hope Gala in Ess*x, VT – an evening dedicated to supporting essential programs and funding research for a cure for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We’re proud to stand alongside our community in support of hope, awareness, and progress.

We offer pharmacy consultations – a private, conversation with your pharmacist to help you feel confident about your meds. Bring a list of everything you take: prescriptions, vitamins, and supplements.
Here’s what you can get from a consult:
➢ Understand your meds (what they’re for, how to take them, side effects)
➢ Catch possible interactions with prescriptions, OTC meds, and supplements
➢ Stay on track with simpler routines and refill options
➢ Save money (ask about generics, discounts, and ways to reduce waste)

Have questions? Ask your pharmacist. We’re here to help.
