What does 20/20 vision really mean?

Most people think 20/20 vision means “perfect vision.” It doesn’t.

20/20 simply means that at 20 feet, you can read letters that a person with “normal” vision can also read at 20 feet. It’s a measure of visual acuity—how well you can resolve fine detail at a distance.

But seeing clearly is only one part of great vision.

True visual performance also depends on:
👁️ Contrast sensitivity (seeing in dim light or fog)
👁️ Night vision
👁️ Depth perception
👁️ Peripheral vision
👁️ Color vision
👁️ Binocular coordination
👁️ Freedom from glare and halos
👁️ Quality of the optical system of the eye

A patient may have 20/20 vision yet still struggle with night driving, digital eye strain, glare, dry eye, or reduced contrast sensitivity.

Conversely, someone with 20/15 vision can resolve even finer detail than the average eye, while 20/40 vision means they must stand 20 feet away to see what a person with normal vision can read from 40 feet.
