Sarcopenia-defined as age-related muscle loss-can begin at around age 35 and occurs at a rate of 1-2 percent a year for the typical person. After age 60, it can accelerate to 3 percent a year.
On average, adults who don't do regular strength training can expect to lose 4 to 6 pounds of muscle per decade. (And most people don't see the number on the scale going down, which means they are replacing that muscle with fat.)

They're called electrolytes because they have an electric charge – positive or negative – when dissolved in fluids, such as blood. Those electric charges signal muscles and nerves. Our bodies would not work without electrolytes. Although you might think of electrolytes as something that comes in a powder, tablet, droplet or sports beverage, you'll find plenty in a healthy diet. For most people, it is absolutely true that we get adequate amounts in the foods and beverages that we consume already.

Electrolytes are essential, but does that mean you need to be seeking out electrolyte drinks, tablets or powders?

What’s the difference between PREbiotics and PRObiotics?

Our bodies get PRObiotics by eating live, unpasteurized fermented foods like plain yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso. We get PREbiotics—the indigestible fibers that feed these bacteria—by consuming foods like oats, bananas, onions, garlic, and asparagus. For optimal gut health, you can naturally combine these elements in your everyday diet: For example, mix oats (prebiotic) with kefir (probiotic) and top with a banana. You can also blend fruit into yogurt or mix chopped onions into a fermented salad.
