Addressing Occupations in Family-Centered Care
Aaron Bonsall, PhD, MSOT, OTR/L

This presentation will demonstrate the importance of family occupations and how they can be addressed and include definitions of family, the importance of family occupations, and an analysis of how doing together is constructed. An understanding of the meaning of
family occupations can enhance the focus of therapy in pediatric care and in other settings that are often overlooked. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of how practitioners can enhance family centered care by focusing on occupations. Practical
strategies for family-centered care include improved communication, examining service-delivery approaches, and taking a top-down approach to understanding families’ needs.

KEYNOTE: Partnering Up in Research Engagements
Sheryl J. Ryan, PhD, OTR/L

This session will use participatory action research (PAR) as a guiding example for integrating research and practice, exploring what occupational therapy can learn from collaborative research approaches that emphasize shared decision-making and meaningful participation. Clients, clinicians, and researchers bring unique areas of expertise that are all needed to
produce relevant and actionable knowledge. Examples will draw from community-based
partnerships and qualitative research experience. The session will conclude with implications for students, clinicians, educators, and researchers, emphasizing knowledge translation, implementation science, and the development of research-practice partnerships.

Special Topics Forum | When Statements of Neutrality Fall Short: Occupational Therapy, Moral Courage, and Common Good.

Occupational therapy has long claimed a commitment to justice, inclusion, and being of service to society. Yet in moments of political and social crisis, professional associations, academic institutions, and workplaces often retreat into neutrality statements, procedural language, or symbolic DEI initiatives that can unintentionally silence difficult but necessary conversations.

In this invited special forum, Frank Kronenberg and OT colleagues will explore the tensions between political neutrality, professional responsibility, and “occupational justice” in today’s world. Drawing from international experiences, contemporary global events, and OT’s historical mandate toward “serving vital needs of society through occupation” (Reilly, 1961), participants will critically examine whether current JEDI/DEIJAB approaches are sufficient—or whether meaningful change requires greater moral courage, accountability, and action in everyday practice, education, and professional leadership. This conversation invites participants to sit with complexity, grapple with contradiction, and reflect on what it truly means for occupational therapy to serve society.

Learning Objectives
✔️Critically examine how political neutrality, institutional policies, and contemporary DEI/DEIJAB frameworks may shape or limit occupational therapy’s responses to social injustice and collective harm.

✔️Explore strategies for fostering moral courage, reflective dialogue, and socially responsive action within clinical practice, education, professional associations, and everyday occupational engagement.

Fee Free. Exclusive for OTAC members only.

Call for Members!

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Occupational Justice (DEIOJ) committee is looking to grow our team! If you’re interested in joining, please contact us at [email protected] for further details.

The purpose of the DEIOJ Committee is to establish DEIOJ practices in OTAC activities, policies, procedures, and communications to prioritize justice in the occupational therapy community.

General Functions:
✔️Communicate DEIOJ efforts from the community and OTAC.
✔️Promote opportunities for engagement in DEIOJ activities and conversations.
✔️Integrate DEIOJ best-practice principles in OTAC activities, policies, procedures, and communications.
✔️Explore strategies to enhance representation within OTAC membership and in occupational therapy practice.
✔️OTAC is committed to creating an environment in which diversity, equity, and inclusion are encouraged, supported, and embraced. As occupational therapy practitioners, we recognize that systemic racism oppresses and harms individuals, families, and communities' occupational development and functioning. We acknowledge that work in support of diversity and inclusion requires a partnership among our members.

If you are committed to these principles, the DEIOJ committee could be for you! Reach out [email protected] and mention you are interested in joining DEIOJ. Someone from DEIOJ will reach out to you once received.
